Question Thermostat question????

I have an '01 L and will soon get a 4# pulley and chip. I have a K&N fileter in the stock box, and TR-5 plugs.

Questions:
At what point should i put in a different thermostat?
Which one should i use?

Side note: I live in Arizona where it's HOT most of the time, which may factor in which degree thermostat i should use.

Thanks!

Hypertech 160 degree, part number 1011. Put it in when you get your chip and pulley and leave it in all year round. My mod's are real close to what you are going to. Running the cooler Thermo will help keep Detonation away. Are you able to get 93 octane gas in Arizona? If you can you will more than likely be ok with the TR5 if your running a lower octane you may have to go with a TR6 just keep your ears tuned in for a few days and listen for pinging or ticking.

usahooters, thanks!

Unfortunately, we can only get 91 Octane here. I bought the TR-5's after a few recommendations over the TR-6 for my setup. I didn't think about the Octane vs. the Plugs though. Should i take them back and get the TR-6's?

I run TR-5's and a 160, no problems. I also have the crappy 91 octane and high heat in the summer.

Just keep an ear out for any detonation, but you should be fine.

Is the 160 deg. thermostat too low of a temp. for the following mods?

2 lb. lower pulley
Denso plugs
K&N filter

This is in California (SF Bay Area) weather, so it's not usually really hot (90+) for much of the year. I noticed that JDM says that 170 deg. is the lowest thermostat that they recommend. Do you think that I'd have problems with running too cold with this combo?

I put in my 1011(160*) 'stat a few months ago. Bot it thru Auto Zone--special order--3 days. Very good 'insurance' against detonation.

I have the 'colder' BR7 plugs and we've had 30* weather here off and on. The ECT decimal readout shows it's at 69-78*C which is from 169-171*F(approximate). So far, no issues with it.

It's an easy job, particularly if the stock airbox has been replaced with an open air filter--you don't have to remove the filter, just loosen up the power steering reservoir bracket. Before you do anything, get a low/flat 2 gal(minimum) container and a 2 foot lenght of 3/8' vacuum hose. Locate the 3/4" white nylon 'nut' at the lower rt. corner of the radiator. Next to the 'nut' is a nipple. Slide the hose onto the nipple, open the 'nut' and drain out between 1 1/2 to 2 gals. of coolant and you won't spill any when you remove the 'stat housing.

Keep your receipt because a few guys have gotten a 'stat that won't fit because Hypertech has packaged them in the wrong box.

I'm from WV and it's fairly cold in the winters.. Could I go with the 160* therm. w/ my mods? (see Sig.) I also just ordered the NGK TR-6's today, they should be here in a few days. Also, do I have to get my chip reburnt for these mods?
