what size tubing did you use for the duct and where did you find the plastic scoop?

It is 3 inch if you look at the pic of my upper grill you can see the scoop.

I got the scoop from a local speed shop, it is the same scoop JL uses on his ram air kit. It is maid bu taylor.

The only change I would make if I did it again would be to drill the hole a little closer to the left edge of the air box housing.

Get a K&N air filter that fits the stock box. Get you two or four long quick ties. Take the bottom of the air box off completly, and strap the K&N filter to the bottom of the top half of the air box. Works great. I am run on 93 octain, filter, #4 pulley,JMS chip, and getting 405HP/505T to the tiers. Usahooters showed me how to do this. The truck has more I can turn it up, but why tear it up?

How much gain did everyone get from this mod alone?

I am in the process of making mine and it will be done tomorow night (hvae to work tonight)

I do not have a lightning, I have a 99 supercab 5.4 with a navigator front end

I bought a a air conditioning reducer to fit in my fog light holes
ran the left over to a T connection and the left into the T too
Then I am running it up the fenderwheel and into the stock hole

This way I am not cutting anything up and it all can be undone

Question

I'm kinda curious about the hp gain, too.

I would think it would be about the same as I saw just adding the K&N filter by itself, but maybe not.

Maybe the tuner-types could post their findings.

Air Box

The air is at its hottest 1 foot off the ground which is bad for horsepower. In addition, you pick up crap from the street. Why not just make holes in the bottom of the box and leave it at that. Once you get moving, the air under the hood is cool enough to draw from and there is lots of it in these trucks.

My question is why not go for an open filter versus to modifying the box? Is it a concern over noise?

33-2140 is the K&N part #
Like lightningsvt01 said, the open box works great, I picked up 2and1/2 tenths thru the 1/8 mile just by removing the bottom of the box. I am a firm believer that Ford put some thought and engineering into designing the air box top so that it actually helps the air down the throat and through the MAS. I may be wrong but its working for me and Lsvt01. And I can put the bottom back on in less than 5 minutes and I didn't ruin it for warranty issues.

I know this topic has been beat to death, but I can say this. With the cool weather this time of year, if your not getting the performance you expected from a filter kit from one of the 4 top tuners, your sure not going to get it from ANY air box mod.Especially if you go with other mods, like a pulley, chip , T.B.. The more air your engine needs with mods, the less effective the airbox becomes. I know a few of the crowd will argue this , but the more exposure around the filter the better.Heat sheilding will help a little. I've tried all the combos and find the 10 -12 inch S/B filter works the best.
