Why a good tuned chip can save your motor....

First off let me say this is not to flame anyone. Over the weekend I got to meet a new friend off of here. He has a 02 L with a Chip & 4lb Lower pulley. His chip did not come from one of the 3 major tuners. He wanted to run it so I gave him some tips and let him borrow my helmet. He did have traction problems on the 2 passes he made but I could hear something was wrong with his truck. He asked me to try it out. I got up to the line cleaned the tires off, and started then run. I rolled it out decently on the F1's and was off to a good pass. It started pinging right before the 1/8 mile and would not shift into 3rd gear. I have heard plenty of pinging but this one was WAY more than I have ever heard. Of course I had let off by then and when I got back to the pits I told him something was majorly wrong and I wouldnt run the truck anymore. I popped his hood and found the motor & blower to be smoking hot from it being WAY TO LEAN!! He babied it home, but by the time he got it there is had a noise in the motor..

This is a great example that a improper tune (Just Pinging!!) can make you mess up a rod. I feel for him because the truck did not have many miles on it and he get screwed on a Custom Burn charge from this OTHER company.

Remember, Any pinging is bad. Pay the reburn fee if your tuner has one, or you could be buying a new motor....

I think that you need to get rid of this thread! You say your friends name, his state, his color and year truck. Saying he had a bad tuned chip. People say Ford looks @ this board!! That could turn out bad for your friend. $$$$
I had a motor blow. If somebody would have posted something like what you did before the new one was in place I would have been pissed. No flame. just leave names out.

I guess you guys didn't notice that Rick gave his name, location, color of truck, phone number, list of mods, and where he was when the misshap happened, in his original post.

Don't misunderstand, I feel for the guy, but I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would jump the hell out of a 300 mile motor. I'm no expert, but I do know that even hand-built full spec race engines are carefully bench run to break 'em in before they'll let the likes of Andretti yomp on them. It's about setting the internal tolerances.

Yep, they aren't stupid. This stuff costs serious money.

The OEMs and their suppliers (who end up having to solve these problems for them) pay some attention to this kind of stuff. It's generally a good idea for those involved to keep the details private. The OEMs and suppliers can do some pretty sophisticated analyses on the returned parts to determine the failure mode. It's usually pretty clear what happened. If you have a failure and you have mods, try to protect your identity.

fwiw - if you think Ford is bad about this, go check the problems WRX owners are having with SOA! It seems as if the weak point of WRXs is the tranny, and SOA is using posts on I-Club to deny warranty claims just based on driving habits. See www.i-club.com.

I know that JL and BABolt have taken their trucks straight to the track and run them, but these guys can also fix 'em themselves. I think I would have waited a little longer, but what the hell do I know.

This thread is for others info only. Not to say Ford should take care of anything we do to our trucks. I am saying he was sold a Chip that was suppose to be burnt for his mods and it was not. I dont care what the guy says, that chip was not setup for ANY PULLEY!!

For those out there who don't know the effects of pinging or detonation it will not cause your rods to fail or break. It will destroy your pistons, valves and spark plugs but I have never heard of it ever causing a rod to break. I know when my engine blew the cause was not detonation but a weak rod. Other than the piston that broke, all the other pistons looked fine. When I was in Chicago to see the new Cobra I had a chance to talk with the people from SVT and even they said the current h.p. levels they are getting is pushing the stock bottom end. They did say they are testing a new motor for the lightning and will make around 500h.p. and will be similiar to the engine in the GT40. And if you don't believe me there is a picture of me and Tom Scarpello on http://www.svtoa.com

Proper break in is in direct comparison to the quality of parts and the quality of assembly.

Every engine Porsche builds for a production car is run at red-line for one hour prior to it going into the car. Today's trivia tid-bits.
