First Oil Change

Looking to do my first oil change to the L tomorrow.

Does anyone have any tricks to it or tips. I've done many oil changes before, but never on my L yet so any info is welcome, thanks in advance

Well, I hope you use a synthetic......and the K&N Gold filter(it's easier to take off because of the 1" 'nut' on the bottom).

Tips:

1. You don't need to jack it up if you have a long enough(18"?) extension for the drain plug socket. Be sure and cut the wheels to the far right so you can get to the filter.

2. Fill the new filter with as much new oil as you can--maybe a half of a qt.--and smear a little new oil on the filter gasket.

3. One guy turns the eng. over(without starting it) until he sees oil pressure but I've never had to do that.

4. 6 qts--no more.

All I can thinkof.........

I do this. Just hold the gas pedal ALL THE WAY to the floor and turn the key to start. Just make sure you hold the gas to the floor or else it will start.

LIGHTNINROD, can you get to the filter without jacking it up? Also, do you know what size socket fits the drain plug? I will be doing my first oil change on my L shortly and would appreciate any help or additional pointers you can give. Thanks for the help.

Incon306 Thanks. I assume you have to jack it up to get the filter off. I have ramps but I am concerned about scrapping the bumper cover and the width of the tires compared to my ramps.

Yes, you can get to the filter with all four tires on the floor--and I don't have extra long arms. Before you cut the eng. off, turn the wheels to the far right. Stretch out on the floor and you should be able to reach it with a filter-removal tool. This is another reason to use the K&N filter because with a long 1" box-end wrench, you don't have to stretch much at all.

6 qts--total! .

I used 5 1/2 quarts including what went into the filter.

Also I jacked up the truck enough so that I could get under to remove the plug and the filter, made it easier thats all.

When I change my oil I put a jack under the front end(from in front of the truck), raise the front wheels off the ground, then climb under the truck from behind the front, left wheel. Just make sure to position the jack so you have room to place the drainpan under the oil plug and filter.

As mentioned above, be sure to 'somewhat' fill the new oil filter before you install it. 6 quarts TOTAL.

unless your engine is above 5k then change it with regular dino juice and not synthetic. you really want the engine to break in completely before you switch to synthetic. btw, you did break it in right didn't you?

5 1/2 quarts....NO MORE.

It will help keep oil from being sucked up into the intake.
