Detonation wont cause any rod noise, and he hasnt "blown the engine or thrown a rod" yet, its just making some noise. The detonation will burn the top of a piston down, exposing ring lands, and maybe cause head or valve damage most of the time.
WRONG WRONG WRONG. Detnation occurns when combustion in a cylinder occurs either before or at top dead center. Before TDC tries to push the piston back down as the crank is pushing the rod up....which could lead to failure. If it occurs at TDC, the combustion pushes the piston/rod down on the crank in a straight line.....also known as "jackhammering". Both of these will cause what is known as "death rattle" or "pinging".

Most detonation occurs when the timming is over advanced, or fuel is run with an octane rating that is lower than specified. A gasoline octane rating is that blend's ability to resist combustion without an ignition source. If your engine is running hot or lean, running lower than 93 octane....that engine is doomed.

How was it improperly tuned? If i put on a 4# pulley and chip burned for 91 Octane and the 4# pulley (plus better plugs) how would i know if it's tuned properly or not? Just curious because my '01 is bone stock until the mods come in a couple weeks. A blown motor just scares me!
Doesn't matter if your chip was burned to run on 91 octane. The engine was designed to run on 93. And with a 4 # pulley you will soon be a statisic.

they sell the chip

if the dealer sells the chip, and they chose not to warrenty the motor.....the odds of that holding up in court are slim to none. Total conflict of interest. It is your understanding the the dealership is there to support you......why would you be under the impression that a part they sell you for your truck will damage it......right........right......

If he bought the chip from the dealership and then went and installed a 4# pulley without their knowledge, you're right, this could get very interesting.

Add a another notch to the "if you're going to play, you'd better be ready to pay" post.
