Need some chip/filter combo advice (long)

Got a feeling that I'm just beginning the torture of getting batted back and forth between my dealership and Superchips. Before I go round and round dorking with this problem, I'm thinking of pulling the plug on my current setup and going elsewhere. Here's the run-down as condensed as I can get it:

1. I bought my truck (2000) new, at 1,000 miles ordered a Pro-M mass air meter & a custom Superchip supposedly calibrated to run with the Pro-M

2. The 1st chip was awful. The shifts were so rediculously hard that I could hardly stand driving the truck. Also, the truck would over-rev and the computer would shut it down in the middle of a 1/4 mile run. It was an "early" chip. I called, they said "yes, we've fixed those problems, send it back.

3. The 2nd chip shifted acceptably, and the over-rev was gone. But I would get slight detonation: ONLY on really cold days. Only at full throttle. I knew that the Pro-M's were known to be a bit off on calibration sometimes, so I knew I needed to send the chip back for them to do one last tweak to richen it up at full-throttle just a touch to compensate for the Pro-M. In the meantime it was running consistant high 13.30's with those being the only mods (with a bit of Cam 2 in the tank to ward off the pinging). Not bad.

4. Oops, 19,000 miles go by, I still haven't gotten around to sending it back (procrastination). I finally yank the chip and tell them, "It's a custom program for my Pro-M, but it still pings just a touch". They say that they'll update it and take care of it.

5. I get the chip back and install it. Seems great. I take my truck to the dealer to get the 2001 intercooler warranty upgrade. Two days after the upgrade my "Service Engine Soon" light comes on. Dealership checks it, says "it's your chip". I say, "I didn't get the light before you guys messed with it." Then they say "it's the mass air meter". I say, "sorry guys, that meter has been on the truck for 21,000 miles, never a problem." They say, "well, you're getting a lean code, so it's one or the other." I say, "O.K., I'll get with Superchips".

4. A superchips tech tells me "It's that Pro-M, you don't need it. Put your stock unit back in place and it'll perform just as well". WHAT???? Why have you guys been doing a "custom-burn" for me, now for the 3rd time, and NOW you tell me to toss my Pro-M out? And how is it that the new 2001 Lightning is running yet a larger mass air meter. This sounds like B.S. from someone who doesn't want to figure out what the real problem is. I ran for 19,000 trouble free miles with a known "slight" lean condition, and never got a warning light. Now I get a light with their latest version, and it's my Pro-M that I've had all along? I'm also wondering how the new intercooler may be affecting or increasing air-flow and temperature. I want to start a new dialogue with a new company. What do you guys recommend? I know of Diablo, but what basic chip/filter/mass-air/airbox setup seems to be the hottest ticket for performance these days? I apologize for not being "up" with the forum, but I'm simply too busy these days to hang out here. Thanks for reading my long diatribe.

What part of FL are you in. If you can I would recommend calling Chris Johnson and drive up and let him take care of it for you. He will do a custom tune on the Dyno and do it anyway you want it. Theres just nothing like doing the actual tune on your chip in your truck, know what I mean.

I'm in Ocala, which is a chug of a drive. I know, to get things right there's no substitute for spending time on the dyno. But my schedule does not permit. But I will be in Pensacola for a Mustang show in about a month. How far is JMS from Pensacola?

Show up at Fun Ford Weekend in Orlando March 2nd or 3rd and have JDM tune your chip for you. That will solve all your problems.

I would call one of the Lightning-specific tuners that support this and other L forums. Talking over the phone with one of them should solve your problem but don't expect a 'free' reburn of your existing chip in fact, a new chip from one of them(taking into account your mods) can be tuned to fit your needs.

1. PSP(Power Surge Performance)--'Lightning Tuner', or Sal.--Autologic chip.
2. Johnny Lightning Performance-JLP--Diablo chip
3. SVT Performance--JDM Engineering--Superchip.

They are all knowledgeable and will 'work' with you. They all race their products on their Lightnings. Btw, think about getting one of their pulleys too and really 'wake up' your L.

Give Chris a call, he actually lives in Pensacola but his shop is in Mobile, about an hour west of Pensacola. He has worked magic on a lot of L in our area. What could a phone call hurt? I like getting things done as close to home as I can. Or do what Don said.
