Oil opinions? quantity vs. quality

I want to get an idea if it is better to get more frequent oil changes (ie. @3000 miles with conventional oil) versus synthetic oil (ie @10,000 miles). The obvious answer would be synthetics @ 3000 miles but I want a cost to benefit answer. It would seem that more frequent oil changes would get rid of contaminents and keep everything lubed up in all but the extreme cases. What are your opinions?

Mobil 1 oil and filter, at 3000 change filter(replace lost quart of oil obviously), at 6000 change oil and filter and alternate like that every 3000.

I change my oil and filter every 3000 miles. I use a Motorcraft oil filter and Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic oil. All oil whether synthetic or not will get dirty over time. I don't really give it a second thought. I guess if I was looking for cost benefit I would have bought something that would get 30 miles to the gallon on 87 octane.

I'm a believer in 3000 mile intervals on synthetic. Maybe its excessive but I think of it as (relatively) cheap insurance.

I didn't put synthetic in until the 9000 mile oil change - wanted to make certain that the motor was properly broken in. Some will say synthetic right away but I wasn't comfortable with that.

Thumbs up

I fully agree with DB and 2000black on this one. I don't care if you guy's think we are excessive, it's just good insurance and peace of mind. If I want to be cost effective, i'll drive a moped.

The biggest benefit in using synthetic oil is in it's lubricating properties. It gets to the parts sooner on start up and is less susceptible to viscosity break down at higher temps. Most of the wear on a motor occurs at start up. I run redline in my truck and still change it at 5000km. This is excessive for this oil(I could use any synthetic at this interval but only the best for my baby). Anyways I would reccomend using synthetic oil with a good filter and change it at 5000km (3000 miles, for you americans) for reduced wear on your engine.

0W-30 mobile one every 3k with factory filter but this will most likely change to a more expensive synthetic after my engine is done being built.

There are several very knowledgeable "racers" on this board who change oil/filter the day before EVERY race weekend.

If you are a serious racer...... I don't think the brand /weight matters nearly as much as knowing that you are circulating clean and somewhat debris free lubrication.......This is very cheap insurance.

Most of us have a considerable amount of hard earned money invested in these motors.......and you are concerned about
3000 or 6000 mile oil changes?

It takes very little time, and costs relatively very little money. If you are just an occasional firewall stomper,....thats one thing,......but if you are like me, and I suspect, most other "L" owners,....... change your oil/filter as frequently as you can afford. ( Particularly during "racing season".)
