New Competition-2003 Dodge Ram RT/10
New Competition-2003 Dodge Ram RT/10
I was at the Detroit Auto Show a few weeks ago. Dodge introduced a prototype of the new Dodge Ram RT/10. It essentially has the complete powertrain from the new Viper in full tune. 503 HP, 525 ft/lb torque, 6 speed manual and 23" wheels. The exterior is very low key almost stealthy. I spoke to the Dodge engineer on site and they will not de-tune the engine and they fully intend to be the king of the hill in 2003. It looks like Ford has a serious challenge in sight and some serious catching up to do.

The vehicle at the Detroit show had many changes from the above unit including better wheels and many minor appearances changes. This vehicle is evolving but the powerplant is fixed.

The Dakota was never intended to compete with the Lightning
Although a few enjoyed picking on the Dakota RT, it was really a vehicle in a different class. Any self respecting Lightning owner wouldn't get caught in such a silly dual. Now we have a real challenge developing and I absolutely love it. Since the intro. of the gen 2 lightning, Ford has not been pushed to up the ante. Colleti has enjoyed un-challenged bragging rights. The Ram RT/10 is scheduled for production and will undoubtedly bring new innovation to the Lightning in the form of new power and perhaps independant suspension from the 2003 Expedition. Any way you look at this, a better Lightning is a great thing!
