Alum or Steal Driveshaft?

What should I keep in my truck? Should I keep the 99 shaft or get a new 5 in Alum like I had? I read some old posts and saw alot of the 5in shafts have been broke. What do you think?

If your truck is lowered close to 4" you need to take a look up under the frame around the center of the driveshaft as it will hit a cross member.

Richard,
Your truck is lowered like mine, I have a aluminum drive shaft that Is in my attic with all my stock parts. My truck is a 2000 so I did start off with the steel shaft but after I lowered it I noticed that I was hitting it from the axle wind up and did not want to join the broken driveshaft club. So I put the steel one back on and did the safety loop, I also put on the JDM lift bars so now I should be alright to put the aluminum one back on but it is up for the winter and when it comes out in the spring I will be pushing some really good numbers on the dyno so I think the steel will stay in.
So my advise would be to take care of the problem you have with the axle wind up by getting some good traction bars and a loop if you don't have one already and keep the steel one in.

If you really want the 5" Al peice, then get some traction bars and a drive shaft loop and you should be set. Either way, it doesn't hurt to have traction bars...

Bill,

I have a loop thank god, it saved me from tearing up the truck. I got some bars coming that I am going to try. Hopefully it will work. You want to sell the Alum one that you have?

Richard,
Good to hear that you had a loop. I am not really into selling stuff, I will just keep it in the attic with the rest of the stuff and maybe someday I will use some of it, but thanks for the offer. I know you can buy new ones from some of the venders and tuners, JDM has them and I seen one on their display wall so I know they have atleast one there.

If you are looking to buy the 5" Al D/S, check out Mark at Lightning Force Performance. He has excellent customer service and had (not sure if he still does) the best price on the D/S.

Richard, I didn't even think to tell you the other day when it happened, but there is a place up the road for me that custom makes driveshafts. Its Stone Heavy Equiptment. I had them make a thick and strong custom aluminum driveshaft w/ huge ujoints for my 428 mustang. At the time they didn't make driveshafts for cars since they are involved w/ dumptrucks and tractor trailers but I talked to the guy thats in charge, who is a friend of my dads, and he made me one. Now they will make them for anything. I know that they have made plenty that have been in 1,000hp race cars since. Email or call me and I'll give you more info. I guarantee that this driveshaft will be at least twice as strong as a ford unit. Mike
