Call Jim at JDM he is putting a set in my truck.

I have no idea what pin bore he is using, but he is putting in Federal Mogal pistons.

How much better are these Manley Rods than the stock ones? Would it be wise to invest $400 in a set for my L? What advantages do they have?

2000 Black "Shadow" L
-JL DiabloSport Chip
-DiabloSport Line Mod Valve
-JL Air Induction
-90mm MAF
-160* thermostat

Installed this week: Bassani Cat-back Exhaust

Mods to come:
3.73 gears
JL 3# Pulley
Lowering Kit of some kind
Denso Plugs

Manley offers 2 different types of rods for the 5.4L Modular engine: H-beams and Pro-series I-beams. While both are significantly stronger than the stock (powdered metal) pieces, Manley actually recommends the I-beams for any blown/turbo applications. Here is a pic:

These have the 22mm (stock) pin diameter and are good for 800+ HP per Manley (vs. 700 HP limit for the H-beams).

When I spoke to Manley they recommended the H beams for 700hp and under. With the addition of different ARP bolts the same rods are good to 1000hp according to the Manley rep I spoke with.

Couple of questions for anyone that has installed these rods in their motors.

1) Did the engine need to be rebalanced, I'm guessing yes, and if so how much weight added?

2) Did you reuse the stock pistons or go with aftermarket? If aftermarket were you able to order a set in the correct weight to bypass the rebalancing of the motor?

I only ask because I have a new motor ready to be installed to replace my smoking stock motor and had given some thought to upgrading the internals of the new motor while I had the chance.

Any info appreciated.

Thanks,

John

I am personally waiting for the Manley pistons to come out. You will need to rebalance everything.

I'm assuming that's flywheel, right? If so we need some ARP bolts casue I think there's some of us approching that 700flywheel hp already! Sal's got to be close, as does Jim and JL.

Do you know if ARP has a bolt kit for our motors yet? I want to rebuild, but I'm not going to do it then pull the motor again just to add new bolts. I would rather wait for the bolts to make it easier on me.

The ARP rod bolts that come with the Manley rods are good for up to 700 flywheel hp and are made of 8740 material. The upgraded ARP rod bolts which increase the strength up to 1000hp are made of 2000 material. I am not sure if they have a complete set for our motors yet.
