Clunk Fixed!
Clunk Fixed!
Just got the truck back from ford and the clunk fixed and as a added bonus my handling is 100% better!
i'd suggest everybody gets it fixed, i thought it was just a bad noise from the washer, but it also made the handling worse.

hmm
i've been inquiring lately because i think my truck just came down with the clunk. From what i've gathered from different members of the board....ford's first attempted fix was horrible. Herbs washers seemed to work the best, but wasn't permanent. Ford now has a second fix that seems to be holding up just as well as herbs washers....so while it's under warrenty, if it is....let ford attept it. If it doesn't work....go with herb's washers. Just my opinion.

Hmmmm........... Herbs washers has permanently fixed mine also. I'll admit, I was wishful thinking before the '01's were built. I thought for sure that Ford would not continue to build the '01's just like the '99's & '00's, knowing there was a problem. I was way wrong.
I'm trying to help another '01 owner at present time. I just met him in Las Vegas at Costco, a few weeks ago.
Here is parts of an e-mail from him to me. This is why I will not waste my time with the dealers in Las Vegas.
I also steered him from a chip if he wants to retain his warranty. Check out what the dealer told him about a chip & his warranty.
I hope you don't mind me posting this Doug.

Rick,
I e-mailed Mr. Jackson the day you sent this but still no reply. Any other
suggestions on how to contact him to purchase the washer. I took my
Lightning into the Ford Dealer yesterday to have a "clunk" in my front end
checked, a whine in the power steering checked, and to find out why the
truck always pulls to the right slightly. The "clunk" happens when my
wheels are turned and I am slowly backing up. They said it was normal and
was caused from the brakes. The whine in the power steering was normal even
when the steering wheel was not turned all the way. They said the pulling
to the right was from the crown of the road. So...I took the car to
-------------- Tires (I got their extended road hazard warrantee) and had them
rotate and balance the tires. Only one tire was slightly out of balance.
Surprisingly, now the truck no longer pulls to the right! I would like to
get the "Herb washer" and the Napa parts and take the truck into Jim at
Chicks and have them add the parts and do the alignment. I asked the guy at
Ford Service if adding a chip to the computer would void the truck
warrantee. He said it would only void the computer warrantee and that if
something was to go wrong they would have to reprogram the computer which
costs about $200.00. Do you think it is worth it? It is from ------------- and
adds 30HP and 35ftlbs of torque. See you on the road.

not permanent
not permanent meaning it's not 100% that'll fix it and last the life of the truck. In searching throught the millions.....AND MILLIONS of clunk posts and threads ....some people who used herbs washers did still eventually get the problem again. Don't get the wrong idea, i'm not sticking up for in no way at all!!!!!!!!!! I'm just saying herbs washers are the best fix out there to date but they haven't solved everyone's problems. When i take my winter wheels off in the spring , i'm bringing mine in for an alignment(pulls to the left) and i'll have them do their ford fix. If it don't work, i deal with napa everyday and i'l have them send over the cam kit and get some washers.

Just to be clear - That Doug is not Me....
And since Herb is NOT a supporting Vendor and has been asked repeatedly to NOT market on this site - I have been forced to close/delete a number of related threads that included contact/marketing info.

Believe it or not, I'm helping this person because I don't want to see him go through a bunch of tires, and headaches (read that, for no money).
Just out of curiuosity, Doug........ What method have you used on your 2000 Lightning to keep the D/S lower control arm from going where it wants to ? Do you have abnormal front tire wear ? If not, how many miles do you have on your L ?
Thanks, Rick
permanent
i'm not trying to be a tightass here, but there's no way anything could be perminenty fixed on your truck. If so, that means you'll never have a problem with it ever again. I don't know about you guys, but maybe my crystal ball's batteries are a bit low, but in time i can guarentee that eventually those washers will wear. That means it's not perminent. Just my opinion....

I have 34000 miles and get about 15-18000 miles froma set of tires...
I had Ford put the Washer fix on my 2000
The tires have worn even across. Just lucky I guess. I rotate every time I can and keep it aligned.

I have experienced this problem on a 99 an 01. The way I fixed both is simple. Get it aligned and have Ford install the camber kit.
Tack weld the washers front and rear on the drivers side A-arm.
The bolt\stud can be removed if need be. Save yourself the cash for the tires. and the hassel.
