Opinions On PSP's Fast Air System?

I am looking at purchasing some type of cold air induction and have been looking at Sal's Fast Air system. Of those that are currently running the system how good was the fit and finish of the kit, was the install straight forward and lastly how does it perform?

Hank,

I saw it on Totaled's truck in Nov. It looks good. The rubber hose gives you plenty of moving ability for different size tires and rims!!
Its a good kit in my opinion.

JL has a new one coming out as well. I saw it when I was up at his shop last month. He did some measuring with my 20's on to make sure clearance will not be a issue as well. I have JL's current one and love it.

Either way you go, YOU CANT LOSE!!

Just curious, you don't need an electric fan or a new water pump or any thing along those lines to run it, do you? And also, does the fast air kit come with air filter and all that stuff that you get if you were to buy just the filter kit?

Nope......it is just the Fresh Air kit........you have to pay the extra $180 or whatever to get the filter kit.

No fans, etc. are needed. The 'fast air' is fed from a scoop mounted below and behind the bumper. Two flexible tubes(one goes to the bottom of the steel filter box--part of the kit--one goes up in to the fender and attaches to the outer end of the box) brings air to an the 'open' box which in turn, contains the large free-flowing filter. The 'box' bolts up to the stock(01-02) MAF. The box is not pressurized--the eng. takes only what it needs. You want to be sure the box-to-MAF forms a tight seal. It is a well made mod as is JL's. Either one will make your L scream like a raped ape!

Thumbs up

HANKFAN
Like the sig says i was the first one to get it on my truck. Went to go see Sal for some mods and he installed it for me. We then went for Test and Tune blasts with his scanner hooked up. On Sal's scanner one of the parameters that we were monitoring was air temp going into the engine. Well sitting on the side of the road waiting for traffic to clear the temp was 90 degrees. Once traffic clearded and we did a WOT blast the air temp dropped an amazing 30 degrees to 60 degrees. So with seeing with my own eyes the results i was more then happy. I think it is the best intake setup out there. Give Sal a call or go here www.powersurgeperformance.net he will take good care of you.

That will be tough. You have to be moving FAST for it to work effectively.

You are wrong PSP FAST Air is not a ram air system. It brings the fresh air up to the filter and shields it from the hot engine air. Here ill let Sal's explantion of how it works say it best.

Quoted from PSP Site:
Here's how it works:

The PSP FASTair system is comprised of a DUAL inlet air scoop, twin 3" hoses, a 12" PowerStack filter, custom PSP machined billet MAF adapter, new air intake sensor, and PSP filter box. Outside air flows into the dual inlet hoses, and is brought to the filter box, where the fresh air enters the box, allowing the motor to ingest fresh outside air, as it needs it. When the hood is closed, there is a one inch gap intentionally left open between the hood and the filter box chamber. When the truck is moving, the air that flows between this gap, will create a vacuum OVER the filter box, and will cause the fresh air to be drawn into the filter area, even quicker. The motor gets all the fresh outside air that it needs.

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about filter kits, compared to the FASTair system:

Q. Isn't this just a ram air setup?

A. No. The PSP FASTair system is a FRESH air system, not a RAM air system. With a ram air system, air is FORCED into the filter, and the motor has no choice but to use it. The result of this is leaner air/fuel ratios. Air/fuel ratios can be leaned out as much as .5-.7 when using a ram air setup. If you have an aftermarket chip tuned for your truck, you are already running leaner than stock, and with race programs, you are running much leaner than stock, and a ram air setup can compromise you motor's safety. If you have your truck tuned on a dyno, it is tuned for maximum performance while standing still, and the ram air is not working on the dyno. When you run the truck, your air/fuel will now be leaner, and you will run hotter and make less power than on the dyno.

There you so its not a ram air as it doenst force feed the engine air it brings the fresh air up to it and lets it take what it needs.

So your saying it will work as effectively on a dyno as it will on the street? If this is the case, why has no one dyno'd the (JL ram air), (PSP fast air) systems?

The FAST Air hasnt been out for that long so im not sure if anyone has dynoed it. As for what i know i can only tell what i seen with my own eyes and that is that the air temp dropped 30 degrees thats good enough for me. Because lets face it even if it isnt working on a dyno which im not sure about your hp numbers are bound to go up from your engine taking in the cooler air instead of the hot eninge air when you are at the track and moving. But if you read how it works the box isnt sealed at the top to create a vacuum so that the fresh air is drawn even quicker to the filter. So im guessing maybe from that vacuum it will work on a dyno. Hopefully Sal will help out on this post.

We must remember a "Dyno" will not show the performance of a "ram Air" or a Fresh Air" system which ever you choose to call it Due to the fact the vehicle isn't moving! The Kits will only show there true potential once the vehicle starts to move *Forces* the outside air up to the filter. i would say around 40 mph and up is when it starts to really push the air up to the filter. We @ JLP were the 1st ones to put this kind of setup on the Lightning truck a few years ago! This was the *ONLY* change we made @ the Modular Motor Shootout. And we took 1st place running in the 12's all day long when before we were running 13.1's. So it does make a big difference, the colder the outside air the *better*! And with our *NEW* Set up comming out in a few weeks it will work even better! To help keep the Hot Engine heat away from the filter...JL
