race gas ?

I'm going to the track this weekend and I want to mix race gas w/ 93 octane. I want to make sure that I get no detonation. I know that if it doesn't detonate on the street then it shouldn't on the track, but the last two times I've gone, it has. I have a #4 pulley, 90mm mass air, open filter, power cooler, and chip. Any info is appreciated. Mike

just add about 3 gallons to what you have in the tank when you get there.

It's too late now(for delivery) but some of us are using Torco Accelerator. It's a race gas concentrate that works and is mixed with 93 oct. and is less expensive than $4.25/gal. gas. 16 oz. withe 10 gals. of 93 will give you 97 oct. They have a site--www.torcoracinggas.com I think.

I'll let cablebandit and CornerCarver chime it with what they have found to work, You may not believe it?

1 gallon of Xylene (from Lowe's, Home Depot)
3 gallons of 93
1 oz. of Marvel's Mystery Oil (to prevent cylinder wall washdown)

The above will make 4 gallons of 100 octane unleaded race gas. It works, and yes I've used it. It cured my detonation until I got the chip reburned. Most race gases above 100 octane are leaded and with repeated use with eat O2 sensors.

You can also substitue 1 gallon of Toluene for the Xylene and Marvel's Mystery Oil mix and this will give you 4 gallons of 99 octane unleaded race gas.

CornerCarver, there is a Bp up the road from me that sells 100oct. unleaded. Would you recommend a couple of gal. of that mixed w/ the 93 or the setup that you speak of. BTW, thanks for posting. I would've never known about that Xylene or the Toluene. Let me make sure I've got this right. If I mix 1 gal. of Xylene then I will also need 1 oz. of the Marvels, but if I use the Toluene then I wont need to mix in the Marvels? Also, which one is better to use? Thanks again

CC,
I've looked for Tolulene in the past and haven't been able to find it. There are chemical places you can order it from but they won't ship to a residential address.

Have you purchased Tolulene? How much is a gallon of Xylene?
Thanks.

Mark

All we can get is 91 octane gas here, what mix ratio do you have to use to get 100? thanks Dennis

mbrown, Check you email

You can get a gallon of Xylene from Lowe's for $9.50. Mix it 3 gallons of 93 @ $1.05 (here in GA) and you get 4 gallons of 100 for $3.16/gallon. $4+ at the pump here and they don't always work.

You can buy it in 5 gallons can for alot cheaper ~$6/gallon from paint supply stores (Sherwin Williams, etc.) You should also be able to find Toluene at a paint supply store. You should be able to make race gas for ~$2.25/gallon with a 5 gallon can. ALOT cheaper if you buy a 55 gallon drum. Right cablebandit?LOL

Xylene is 121 octane, Toluene is 117.

Just average the octanes to get a very close approximation of your tank octane. Don't foget the gas in your tank!

For example:
1 gallon of Xylene and 10 gallons of 93
[121 + (10x93)]/11 = 95.54 octane (11 gallons total)

Using Toluene (same amount)
[117 + (10x93)]/11 = 95.18 octane (11 gallons total)

Another example using 5 gallons of 91:
[121 + (5x91)]/6 = 96 octane )6 gallons total

NOTE:
Never mix Xylene stronger than 30% of total mixture

Hope this helps guys.

Corner Carver, thanks again man. The Lowes in my area have quit selling Tolulene but you can get the Xylene in 1 gal @ $10. I'm trying to find someone to sell me 5 gal. of it. So far Ace Hardware and Lowes dont carry it. Now were hitting up some paint and body shops.
