4# OK On 91 Octane (Sal?)

So I live in CA and don't have the luxury of high octane gas like you east coast guys do.
Anyway, after calling around a little I found that it is probably not a good idea to run the 6# pulley on anything less than 93 octane.
Question is, what about the 4#? I already have a 2#, but I want more. Please let me know.
Thanks.

Also, an unrelated question. Does anyone know a good tuner in the bay area?

You CAN run the 4 pound on CA gas BUT it's not easy. I've gotten calls from many CA customers with 4 lb pulleys and all brands of chips looking for help from detonation. I've even had a few get thier trucks tuned in person in CA and still have mild pinging with the CA pump gas and the 4 pound. It can be done, just may take a few trys to get the tune proper. I'm not too familiar with CA, so let me know what major city you are near, and I can direct you to a close dyno tuner.

Sal, you're not kidding. It's tough getting any consistency in the 91 out here. I've only got a 2# as you know, but from one station to another, using the same brand of gas, you can get pinging with one and not the other.

If you switch brands, the same situation can happen.

It's tough to find quality gas here.

Apex motorsports in Santa Clara is a pretty respectable place from what I've heard. I honestly haven't the slightest if they test'n'tune Lightnings, but their website is: http://www.apexmotorsports.com/

SVTShadow-

APEX Motorsports is the place to go. They have done all of the mods on my lightning, and they have a dyno that can be used to test and tune. They also have a chip tuner that is able to tune autologic chips (PSP Chip). This is the ONLY place to go in the Bay Area. I just had them install a 4# pulley, and it is awesome!!!!

Dave,

How's it going? Are you on AIM? Have you gone to the track yet? If not, we should meet up and go one of these weekends.

I've run a 3# pulley on 91 octane and it was a constant battle to get good gas and a good tune.

What's really bad is that just when you think you've found a station that carries good quality gas, the detonation starts again. It's maddening - I don't think the formulations are very consistent, as Jay mentioned, at least that's the case here in SoCal.

I went back to the stock pulley for now until I can get a custom tune.

Jeff-

I am not on AIM, however, I would definitely be interested in hooking up and going to the track - especially after I get the new blower installed. My e-mail address is D_Coburn@msn.com. Let me know when you are going.

Later,

Dave

Thanks for all of the replies.
Sal, I live in San Mateo. San Jose is about 45 minutes South, San Francisco about 20 minutes North.
StrikesTwice and D_Coburn - Yes, I have heard nothing but good things about Apex Motorsports. Sal, do you know anything about them?
Sounds like it is worth the trip and a couple hours with Apex.
Thanks again.

SVTShadow-

FYI-

Sal's friend (Byron Reynolds) custom tunes chips at APEX. Byron does an excellent job of fine-tuning the chip for each individual truck while it is on the dyno.

Wait---I can get my PSP chip tuned a APEX?!?!?! That would be nice instead of sending it all the way back to NY! But how much do they charge for a dyno tune? Can they replace my motor for me?
