Just had my stereo put in last Saturday; love it!
If you want to spend less than 1K, and have room to upgrade, you may want to get a great head unit - I have the Kenwood KDC-x917 (Ebay, $336) which has enough of an amp to run new speakers. It also has the very graphics screen and the flip face.
I have all Rockford Fosgate, but my fronts are components - and both pieces are behind the speaker grill. I like crisp clear sound, not thumpy stuff and these work great. I have R.F. full range in the back.
Of course, I did put in 2 10" subs and 2 amps, but that's a touch more than $750.
