Angry Problems yet Again!!!!!!! (long)

OK well, where to begin this time around, lol. I got a new intercooler on the truck over a week ago, under the recall. All went well and was doing fine. I went ahead and the Saturday after getting it back....prob 3 days later...decided to install all my mods back. I put Pro-M, JL Ram Air, JL Driveshaft loop, JDM Boost Bypass and the JDM lower blower pulley was already on. I got them done and the truck ran fine, no problems. The following Tuesday, got my chip back from JDM with new warm weather/cold weather programs. I am not lucky enough to have 93 octane gas at all the pumps here in OKC, so I knew I would have a little detonation till I got different gas in it. Ran the truck, all seemed good cept the small amount of detonation I was getting at the top end. I drove the truck the next couple days like usual and then the problems began. Thursday night after driving all day I went back to my girlfriends house and she was like yeah, take my dad for a ride... a die hard chevy man who always gives me hell about my truck. So i decide I would take him finally since it was running great. We were out driving and the truck actually shut off when I came to a complete stop. The truck fired right back up and ran fine for a few minutes and the shut off when I was slowing down to enter his driveway. After letting the truck sit for several hours and making sure the chip was in good, the truck fired right up and I went to leave and made it maybe 50 feet before the truck shut off and would not restart at all. I had to remove the chip to get it to start. When I finally made it home, I unhooked the battery and removed the chip. The next morning I hooked the battery back up and have been driving it since without much problem other than erratic idling. Now when I say erratic idling I mean this thing would hit 500rpm and sit there and jump to 750 and fall and jump again, but it has only done that 2-3 times. Usually it just idles at 500-600rpm now instead of around 750-800 like it use too. I am curious if I could have a fouled plug or two cause there is a bit of detonation without the chip in now, but I wouldn't think this would cause the erratic idle or maybe a bad coil pack now or maybe they screwed up with the new intercooler? I have been super busy at work and home and havent been able to take all the MODS back off but that is tonight or tomorrows project.

ANY IDEAS?

Thanks and sorry for the length.

Eric

i have been having the same problems after my intercooler was changed. the truck would idle funny when i had it in drive and the defrost was on. i think your right it might be a coil or plug problem i took mine to the dealer 3 times and they still cant fix it so now im taking it to another dealer and if they cant fix it... can you say "lemon law". i dont think its the mods. good luck

If you wanted to check to see if the coil packs/plugs are all firing, unplug them one at a time and listen for a change in the idle. If you unplug one and don't hear any change, then that cylinder is probably not getting any fire.

a good way to check if ur coil is good or not, it might be a little tough, but u just unplug it and see if ur idle changes a lot, cuz it will when one cylinder isnt firing. and if it is one of ur coils, it might be just a bad connectin to ur coil, or inside the coil to ur plug. so do that , it might take a while, but it might work

sounds as if it could be a vac leak or a mass air problem.... those are classic signs of jumping idle.

Ummm.. Have you considered checking your plugs?
It seems lke there are WAY TOO MANY of you that feel comfortable "beating" on a truck with DETONATION. Not a smart thing to do. IMO

Just an update, I put the stock MAF back on and it retunred to normal almost instantly. Friday, however, I am going to change the plugs out anyways and make sure the coil packs are fine. I have a feeling the Pro-m isnt able to adjust to the difference in air flow when the JL Ram Air is on and when it is off. This happened the last time I ran the Pro-M and then added the Ram Air.

Dump the pro m mass air flow meter. Get a Ford 90 MM Mass air kit, and have Jim program the chip for the 90 MM Mass Air.

I bet that will solve all your problems.

Good luck
Don

Cool

MisterSVT,

Don is right. Dump the ProM and get a Ford 90mm. Fast1matt had a detonation problem when he put a 2# pulley on. He couldn't get it cured until he put the 90mm on. Now he's running a 4# pulley with no detonation.

I know it's not what you want to heard but it's probably going to be a thorn in your side until you get rid of it.
