Armed?

Ok, I have been wondering this forever. On the remote entry keypad for the L it looks like an alarm thingy also. When I get out of the L, and press lock, it locks the doors, and when i press it again the horn beeps. I thought this meant the alarm was activated but there doesnt seem to be any shock sensors and pulling the door handle doesnt make the alarm go off.......is there really an alarm on there or does it just beep to sound like there is?

If I'm not mistaken, there is not an alawm on it unless you put one on. The horn sounds when you push it a second time to let you know that it has already been pushed.

Nope, no alarm. I repeat, that is not an alarm. On the second press, it honks once to let you know all doors are secure. If a door is not closed all the way or something, it will honk twice.

I thought it wasnt. I guess they just put in on there so you don't really have to buy an alarm, you just make it honk - look around like you're cool - and save 300 bucks.

The horn doesn't have much to do with the alarm according to my dealer when I bought the truck. He mentioned that according to their literature, the truck will honk when you press the lock button more than once, to help you find the truck in a "crowded parking lot", but I see it as more of a nuisance. The alarm is supposed to passivly arm when the last door is closed and locked. There is usually no shock sensor on this type of alarm, it simply goes off if the dome light is activated (door open) without the door being unlocked properly (with key, or keyless entry). the dealer also said that it will honk differently if you leave the door open or the lights on (manually), but I haven't tried that.

I don't know how accurate this info is, since I was considering the source (dealer) but hope it helps :-)

God u guys are quick on the reply :-) I was completing my paragraph and several posts appeared above lol

Has anyone tried locking the doors, (leave window open), reach in from outside, unlock door, open door? I thought this was what the dealer implied when he said "passive alarm". I asked if this had anything to do with the PATS keyfob, he told me it was not the same. Either way, if there is a factory alarm, it's probably as crappy as the stock stereo system... not sure if I would trust to keep a $5000 stereo or something in it without something much more elaborate...

In my truck (Y2k F150 4x4), the passive anti-theft system is the computer chip in the key. No factory alarm.

Hm. I wonder. Wierd thing is, A buddy of mine has a 2k lightning (mine = 1999) , and although our horns have the same tone, mine is MUCH louder than his is (they're both pretty loud regardless).
Is there an alarm module upgrade package that might have been installed? I was looking through my paperwork and couldnt' find any references to it... I'm looking to install a DEI system, so if there does happen to be a factory one, I wanna kill it :-D

O ya- reason for mentioning the horn's loudness, is because typically on cars with factory anti-theft, a custom horn is installed that is louder. I know that some of the 90's buick park Avenue's for instance have an Amtrak type horn if you chose the top of the line model with Anti-Theft. I figured if the horn was louder, that was a hint, not necessarily true.

:-) just wanted to clarify, feel obsessive-compuslive this morning lol

If I lock my doors at the car wash, I have a habit of grabbing the keys and locking the door every time I get out, the alarm will go of if I shake the vehicle while cleaning it. Repetitive horn blasts until I can get the remote out of my pocket. Kind of embarrasing when it's crouded.:o
