Question 4# pulley---What are you guys doing for traction?

Installed the JDM 4# pulley last week. Had JDM reprogram the flip chip with a totally stock side including soft shift and injector cutout (but programmed only to compensate for the 4#), and then a "street performance" side.

That being said. Mine's a 00 and I am having traction problems beyond the useable relm of this truck, this is with the spare and a Snuglid tonneau cover in place. If the air temp goes above 70, it is half bad, atleast in only smokes them thru 1st and part way into 2nd. But at night in the 50's or in the daytime in the 60's, even in the "stock" mode, it will literally smoke the tires completely thru 1st, completely thru 2nd and then a good 50 feet or so into 3rd. This is regardless of whether I go from a dead stop or about a 20 mph roll. I am not exaggerating at all. It is to the point that I'm sure I accelerate slower than stock because I cannot hook up at all. After last weeks run at the track I had my F1's at 18 psi and it was unmanageable, then I pumped them back up to 32 psi and of course its way worse.

I've read all the discussion in the past about the 01's having a different tire compound and treadwear, but in checking my tires, I have the same treadwear as people with 01's.

So what the heck are you guys doing to keep the tires hooked? Traction bars, softer rear shocks, different tires, wider meats?????
I just can't imagine how you guys running bigger pulleys and more mods are able to keep these things hooked up.

The "track" makes all the difference in the world--ask CornerCarver. He's in the mid-12s on F1s at his track with a 3lb. I have the same problems as you do, so I went the M/T ET street way(and Truck-Traks)

Lay off the lead footin'

You truly have to feather these things until you get to an accelerating roll.......not a dead roll.

practice makes perfect........it is possible to get better traction than
smoke the tires completely thru 1st, completely thru 2nd and then a good 50 feet or so into 3rd.

I have the Truck-Traks with a 3# pulley. They don't eliminate spin altogether but they make a significant difference as well as keeping the rearend from coming around so much...

Same Problem Here Peter

But for the street, I just bought a pair of the Nitto DR's to fit the Lightning wheels. I should get my 02 wheels back from being chromed at Santa Ana wheel yet this week, and will let you know how they work after I have a few days to try them out.
I have a set of 15" Goodyear Eagle slicks on JDM wheels I will use at the track. I also use the JDM lift bars.
At least it is not a bad problem to have or one which can not be overcome.

Good Luck,

Lightning Bob

18 PSI on a radial tire is not good. You will have a blow out if you do that. I can run my 20's at 38psi with a 6lb lower and hook up decent. You have to learn to let the truck roll off your convertor. Letting the air out of & doing big burnouts on radial tires is not needed. Run you f1's around 34-38. I had 1.8X's on my F1's, 1.7x's on my ET Streets. The 20's are giving me some problems, i cant get but like a 1.9 or 2.0 with them. Just roll out some....

But since you are going to get your back sooner than me can you post some pics

BTW......did you go with the "SVT" or "lightning bolt" center caps.

I have the same problem. I can do a 30mph rolling burnout now so it is kinda frustrating but its also kinda cool. I dont know how people stick the F1's and still pull the good times, they must be some driving sob's. I went w/ the easier way of E.T. streets for the track and they work beautifully. As for the street, I'm going to go w/ the Nittos as soon as I wear out the F1's. I have a set on my 93 and I love them. Would someone please post a link to a site to check out these "tracks".

Much to LIGHTNINGROD's dismay:

They have just resurfaced the first 1000 feet and leveled it. Should make for even better times.

TRACTION

Ive been running the nittos for about a month now and I love the traction difference between them and the F1. Once they are hot they stick!! I am running the 555R extreme drag radial a 305/45/18 on stock rims with no problems. I will definately stay with them in the future!! Also you can go with the composite leaf spring for the L for under $500 it is a good way to transfer weight and stop spinning!!

later and good luck,
ryan

The truck will not hook on the street for nothing. I don't care what anyone says. The track and street are different. I will blow the tires off my truck from a dead stop or a roll all the way through 2nd gear and into 3rd. But at the track you have to be easy and find where your truck launches the best. I've run consistent 1.77 60fts on my stock F1's at two different tracks. It has a lot to do with driving not as much of the tracks fault as some say. The track does have its bad days and its good days but it can't always suck.

MT ET STREETS. I ran my 4 lb pulley at my track for the first time last Saturday. Granted I launch at low rpm 1000-1200 but I had no problems and got my best 60' ever of 1.82 at a track not known for good traction.

I made am amazing discovery yesterday. I actually ran my ET "Streets" on the street yesterday evening. Maybe I'm crazy, but the felt like they hooked better on the street, than they did at Fontana on Saturday.

Very little tire spin on an industrial street with fresh asphalt. At Fontana, they were spinning pretty wildly.

???

For you guys with traction problems, the Truck-Traks will help with street traction, but there no way to absolutely hook these trucks up with the monster torque that they make, and a majority of weight over the front wheels. The problem gets worse if remove weight from the rear of the vehicle.

My traction bars are very easy to live with on the street. No clunking or rattling, and no clearance issues with the long traction bars that pass between the ground and the exhaust. No extended installation time or disassembly of the rear springs ar suspension. Just bolt them on and go!
