The difference between L and HD?

Sorry to barge in the L forum, but... does anyone know what the exact differences are between the '01 ('02?) L engine and the 340 hp version in the upcoming '02 HD Supercharged? Sorry if this has already been dicussed... I'm a newbie here. Just want to get the 4 door monster into the low 13's.

From what I have heard, it has a larger upper pulley, whick gives you less boost. and maybe the computer is programed to produce less power. Any of our tuners should be able to program a chip to give you more power, and there are a lot of pullies to bring the boost up to or above the 8 lbs that the Lightning come stock with.

Why in the world would Ford intentionally make the 5.4L/SC that goes in the HD less powerful than the L? I know they are only rated 340 HP, but why not 380?

I asked this exact question to the "one's that would actually know".
Here was the official answer.

1. Larger blower pulley.
2. More restrictive exhaust.
That's it.

Driveshafts will be the likely culprit to fail first.

Thier exact quote was, "I give you guys 2 months and you'll have them to 400RWHP".

Two months? Two hours more likely....

I wonder if they installed a larger blower pulley because of the more restrictive exhaust? Furthermore, I wonder why they didn't just use the L exhaust?

Thanks (?) for the answers... this just gives me incentive to make the behemoth haul a$$ . Let's see, 4 lb pulley, chip, filter, long-tubes, full exhaust, shackles, tires/wheels (whatever I want--there's got to be some advantage to owning a tire store ). Should be a blast... anything else I'll likely need?

I'm still negotiating with the dealer on one...

You're right, it should be fun.

I read in a previous thread that the HD was going to have a two piece drive shaft - any truth to that? That may have to be looked at when tuning the HD's.

Getting mine for $300 over invoice... my dealer takes pretty good care of me--I buy a new truck from him every couple of years.

Must be nice.

I've got them down to $700 below sticker and up to $24,000 on a $30,000 trade-in...

I keep looking in the mirror to see if it's actually written on my forehead...

Transmission / brakes

The L has brakes from the F250 and transmission from F350 Diesel. I haven't heard if the brakes and transmission would be on par with the lightning. I wonder if the HD will be able to handle as well as the L (giving a bit of margin for the extra size of the HD). Or will you just end up with a fast ___ that can't stop, won't turn, and blows it's transmission every chance it gets?
