interior paint question ( search no help )

hi every one
i just baught a kenwood kdc 9017 cd player for my 2001L i am about to put it in but would like to paint the inside panels around the raido gloss black. i know that some one on this board has done this before and posted pics. JCW is selling a interior paint kit for around $70.00 but my friends think i can do it for less. we only have a couple questions...
1. what can i use to prep the plastic or plastic primer?? i work part time at a auto detail shop and we have some things there that would work but will melt the plastic ( goof off, ect ) is there any thing i can get at wal mart or napa??
2. i am going to sand between each coat of paint but do i sand the last coat befor putting on the clear coat or just let it dry then clear coat??
thanks

josh

I painted some of the interior panels in my '99 Cobra when I had it. I just used some good dishsoap and cleaned them up really good and then used spray can primer. I found some matching silver in a can and then clearcoated them with clearcoat in a can. It came out really nice, you just have to apply thin coats and be patient. I didn't sand anything and I don't remember what it cost me, but it wasn't $70. Hope this helps.

Cool reply

not sure on what to paint with but you should prep it using a clean rag and some rubbing alcohol. Alcohol will take all of the silicon from the dash protectants used. I would try the ford paint though....
