Why different prices for pullies?

Maybe theres a legit reason, but to me, it seems kinda hokey (man, I said hokey) to charge more for a 5# than a 4#..

Other than it makes more horsepower, whats the difference? I doubt anyone can convince me that it costs THAT much more to make... Really, once the initial engineering is done, shouldnt the price go down when you are just increasing the diameter?

Maybe someone can chime in and straighten out my thinking here, otherwise I dont like it....

Generally machinists say that the bigger pieces require more machining and possibly a bigger stock billet (i.e. more material) if the new piece is that much bigger. In practice for this comparison, I really doubt that there is that much difference in the mfg process between the 2# and 4# pully. However, in a funny way it makes sense to charge more for a 2 than a 4.

I would guess that part of it is it takes a bigger casting or block of aluminum to make the larger size pulleys and depending on how big of a chunk they start off with it could take different equipment to make each size. I work in metal fab and had my guy price out what it would cost to make 10 and he said buy it from them

I think it makes the same sense as a dealer marking a car up $5k just because.

And the difference between a 4# and a 6# in diameter is close to nothing.. Maybe a $5-$10 difference in aluminum stock (again, if Im way off, someone straighten my **** out)

If I made something for $1.00 and you were willing to pay $1000.00 to have it, I'd charge you $1000.00.

depends if they use bar stock or a casting ? And how "big" the starting piece has to be. To make the larger pulley they may have to buy a WAY bigger bar to start with. Also if they sell 10 small pulleys to 1 big pulley then they can make the smaller ones cheeper its all a production thing

Talking

why would you pay 32K for a lightning when you can get an F-150 for 18k???????Get it yet? If a four lb pulley is twice as good as a 2 pound pulley then you aught to be able to get twice as much for right????? If you don't like the price don't buy one.

Well, this applies to any part made out of billet. The larger the chuck you need to start from, the more it costs. As pulleys get larger in diameter, they require a larger size piece of billet stock to start from.

At least I know that the L cost Ford more to make than the 18k F-150..

Im noticing that some dealers do this and some dont. Sal, your prices seem to be closer together. I didnt see a 6# on your page, do you make one?

Im not trying to start a flame war, or degrade anyone. Its just that I try not to pay for BS markup. Im realistic though, and understand that there are associated manufacturing/(other) costs involved as well. From what I have seen, some people charge ALOT more for a slightly larger pulley. It just doesnt add up. More than anything else in business, I like to be treated fairly.

Take Economics 101 - It's called supply and demand. Most people buying pullies want as much boost as they can buy. This causes a larger demand for the larger pullies, therefore the tuners can charge more for them. How many people would honestly buy a 2 # pulley now? Isn't a capitalistic society great?
Buy a pulley. The improvement is worth the price.
I just put the JDM 4# on my new blue 02. I had the 2# JDM on my red 01 and loved it.
