Vtec

I was just reading how an enigne works on howstuffworks.com. At the end there is a FAQ. one of the questions was, what does VTEC mean? Before i read this, all i knew about VTEC was that it had something to do with the cam. After i read this though, i realized VTEC is really a good idea. i wish our trucks had something like that. at the end of the VTEC page, it said in the future we could expect every valve in a motor to have its own soleniod which was contolled by computer. How cool would that be?? anyways, just wanted to share that.

later

Soon we will have pneumatically controlled valves, instead of valve springs for high reving capabilities, variable length intake and exhuast trumpets for more flexible rev bands. Renault (who invented pneumatically controlled valves) is working on computer controlled valves. Ferrari is coming out with a complete engine/gearbox casting in one this year in F1, similar to a motorcycle. Honda had oval pistons a few years ago, but the FIA band them, so developement fizzled. They were very powerful, as they made more room in the combustion chamber.
All this will eventually trickle down. Honda was using its VTEC system in F1 in '88, testing began in mid-late '86. So, we have alittle bit to wait. Hopefully it'll be worth it. Think about how pathetic all the so-called muscle cars of the 80's were 240 hp was alot!

I can't wait til they start bringing out that type of technology on v8's. Just think if honda can squeeze a N/A'd 240hp out of the 2.0L i4 in the s2000, what can be done with 5.4L v8 Plus we'll have torque and low end grunt unlike the Honda 2.0L.
