Question factory tires/frontend probs?

I am interested in purchasing a new L and have been watching the boards while trying to sell my Jeep. One thing a guy told me today at my office was that he went through three sets of front tires in 15,000 miles because the inside of the tire was wearing out. The SVT dealer aligned the truck twice and then replaced the front end!! He has since gotten rid of his L due to this problem. He stated that his front tire blew out at 120mph one of the times and other than a little shaking he was able to control it very well! Whoa! Any pattern to the front end problem? His was a 2000 that he bought new.

Thanks,

I hav about 18000 miles on a 2000 with a very good patern on all 4 tires. Look for washers and 911 with a search to find the only front end problem that I know of. It can and must be fixed on all L's. Tack weld the stock washers or get the ones from 911. Look in the FAQ's (the first post) for plenty of info.

Hope this helps

Andy

I have 26,000 miles on my front tires, and have had great wear.

I put new front springs at 23,000 miles to lower the front end a little. Thats when I did my first allignment, it seams that the 99 and 2000 are more prone to front tire wear than the 2001.

attached is a pic of my front tire at about 20-22,000 miles

I get about 22,000 out of a set of tires. LA is hard on tires due to the great amounts of stop and crawl traffic. Brakes will be about the same.

I have not had any problems on my 99. It has 16,500 miles on it. The tires were replaced by the previous owner due to nails. I have Toyo Proxes S/T's on it now, they are wearing very evenly. Like all cars, it depends on propert alignment, tire pressure and driving habits to keep them even.

My 2000 front tires are cupped BADDLY. They have been bad for awhile, and I am associating them with teh front a arms. Ford says its because i didn't rotate the tires. Although they admit the front a arm slipping will change the alignment...go figure. None the less I am trading my 2k in for a 2k2 soo no worries, new tires =-)

I have 20,000 miles on my 01 L, and just had to replace the drivers side front tire due to excessive wear on the inside edge of the tire. The passenger side tire was worn the same way but not as bad. My tire started leaking so I checked it out and it had little "blisters" all over the inner edge and a few of them had small holes. It was so bad that they couldn't be patched.

Later,
Roger

I had 10,000 on a new set of the sticky F1 tires, and had the upper cams and an alignment done at the same time.
Lost the left front tire inner edge . And the jack does not fit under the a frame when the tire is flat. Ford said i had hit something. Fixed it, charged me $331 for a new tire. It pulled on the way home. Next day they fixed it again, said they had not tightened it enough.
I have 45k on the truck. stock.

ave 2300 on the factory rubber on my 01. Granted I have not smoked them down as often as I did with My first 3 Lightnings.
My son hasn't used it near as much as the 2 99's. I have rotated them once and use the stick on weights for balancing. I hate those GD marks the lip weights make. I'll probably need new rears after this weekend strip trip. The 99 rubber lasted only about 12-14. I did have the nibbled front insides untill I tacked the slotted a-arm washers. alighn it andhave the a-arm washers tac welded or buy Herbs washers. I had the 01 tac welded right off. I have noticed a slight wear pattern on the inside fronts but I believe it is due to lack of rotation. Been a while.
