Calling Bob Tompkins and EGT Guage users

Bob and others,
I am beginning to think that an EGT guage may not be such a bad thing to have, especially for those of us planning on pullies. Do you find it to be useful? Does the gauge respond differently at idle, part throttle and WOT. Can you use it to get a better idea of what the A/F ratio is under actual driving conditions.

Also, where did you put the bung for the guage, on the drivers side or passengers side exhaust. Also, I assume the bung must be placed before the cats.

Thanks for your help!!

Can't believe there are no opinions on this subject, so I will talk to myself for a minute. This is what I have decided after doing some reading and thinking.

Thanks for the post GDG (thanking myself now and acknowledging myself). Yes, I think that the EGT gauges are a worthwhile device and are way better and more informative than the narrowband A/F guages. Here is what I have decided to do. I plan on running a dual thermocouple probe set-up, one on the drivers side exhaust, and one on the passengers side. The guage will either be a dual digital guage with dual readouts(without memory), or a single guage with a data box collector and memory for the dual probes (similar to the Autometers Dual EGT set-up).

I plan on putting the probes on the exhaust manifold, similar to what Bob Tompkins did. Initially I was thinking of putting it just after the collector just in front of the first cat, but I believe this to be a bad location. I will search later after this post to decide which cylinders tend to burn up the plugs the most, and put the probes at those locations.

It seems to me that with all the melted spark plugs that have occured due to the extra boost and altered fuel curves via our chips, that the EGT guage would be a very worthwhile mod to have. If my thoughts are correct, this essentially would be the next best thing to having a wide band O2 analyzer in continuously use (which is not practical or feasible as we all know). This is what I was hoping people would chime in on. Am I off base, or is rational thinking?
