Has this happened to you? Water temp was creeping up today (first time) and then went way beyond hot, pegged to the left, oil can light went on, no obvious engine trouble and in about 15 seconds temp went back to half way (normal) oil can light went out. Very strange. Coolants and oil levels full.

 

I wonder if your getting wrong voltages from your battery or altenater. Things like that make guages do some weird things....

You didnt find anything really wrong other than the guages?

 

ICULOKN, Nothing wrong except the two guages.

 

The oil can light with the little temp symbol is for engine overheating/low oil pressure. It comes on with temps over 260, I think. If it had run much longer the fail-safe cooling strategy would have started.

I think you overheated the motor, I'd guess the thermostat stuck closed for a bit. Are the levels okay?
