manuals or autos?
manuals or autos?
hey guys,
i was looken a post a day or two ago and it got me thinking. it got sidetracked into a convo about transmissions i believe. anyways, some one was saying that a auto knows best. how can this be? i know these slush boxes have made amazing progress. but if they are so smart...why do manuals put out the best lap times? seems to me they should make a manual tranny for the L. it would be a very nice option. i can not see why they do not do this? anybody care to explain. lazyness is all i can think of. don't get me wrong, autos are really nice...but you would think on a performance oriented vehical like a L it would have a option for a manual. better yet, a option for a auto and have the manual be standard.

With a 5 spd it would be messed up to shift because the shifter would be too long, unlike in mustang, its short easy to shift, i have a f 150 5 spd and it is hard to powershift. if they did a good upgrade would be something like a 5.0 Shifter... But yes i guess it would most deffinately be something to try, i'd buy one with a 5 spd
Around town and maybe haveing alittle fun, the auto is great. It isn't untill you really get serious about raceing that a stick becomes faster.
My daily driver is a Nissan 2.4L 5Spd Pickup. When going around some nice twisties around the house here I can leave it in third gear and turn four to six grand through the run (running about 55MPH at the slowest and about 80 at the end of the long(est) straight). But the Thunderbird will try to fall in to O/D when I let off the gas for the turns. But when I hit a straight it and get back on it, it has to down shift to third and then to second to get the 4.6L SOHC to wind backup. Even though I can average about 20MPH faster through the run with the Thunderbird, they will run about the same time through the stretch of road becuase of the hesitation of the auto.
But for drag raceing and fun daily driveing, the auto that comes with the truck is just fine. If you like to auto cross your truck, im sure a chip can be burned to keep the truck from shifting untill a certian MPH to keep it in the power band.

I'm with LLoverCrazyJay,
It would be a nightmare on the drag strip unless there was a way to go with a shorter shifter.
Outside of that it would be great to have a 5 or 6 speed.
