Question Used vs New Lightning

I have e-mailed no less than 6 for sale Lightning owners trying to buy one of the 2000 or 2001 models. I have only received 1 picture.
I drove a new 2002 Black bolt located in El Cajon , California.
What are the advantages of buying a new one? There is also a 2002 metallic blue one at Drew Ford. I am after a RED Lightning.

My 1999 5.4 4x4 supercab flairside just developed an oil leak around the right head. I have 35030 miles on it and the dealer has ordered a new complete engine. I am using it to go to Colorado River this weekend, then the dealer can have it.
I ask them to replace it with a Lightning block--Yea Right! Then they called and said that they would get me a price on the difference in cost??? I am not holding my breath.
When I worked for Ford I did get a 360 replaced with a 428 SCJ way back in the 1984 era. Now that 4x4 suprised many hot rods.

Advantages?????

I'd simply say that if you get a new one you know some wild maniac hasn't been driving it around (think about it...how do people drive/get a high performance, supercharged truck)? I givw mine everthing I've got on the road, as I'm sure others do as well. Also, you'll have a warranty.

There all lots of pros and cons to buying new vs. used. It's for you to weigh and decide.

Interest rates now are down, thats a plus for brandnew. No one else drove your truck. 01's & 02's have a few tweeks, 380 hp vs. 360 hp, 450 tq vs 440 tq, aluminum drive shaft, 3.73's vs 3.55's

Buying used you have let some one else pay the depriciation for that vehicle. Rule of thumb is 20% as soon as you drive off the lot.

Rest is up to you to figure out. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight. You are right! On my test drive the sales guy egged me on to put the hammer down.
With only 24 miles on the black bolt I went 0-100 and back to 30, then he wanted me to stand on it getting on the freeway on a 270 degree on ramp.
I decided that I did not want to buy a wrecked truck so I didn't go over 40 the rest of the trip.
Was a great ride. It felt better than my Cobra. I have sold the Cobra because it was to prone to break the tires loose at 85mph in 3rd gear.
I've called the dealer and have asked for a quote and delivery on a new 2002 RED Lightning.
I am going to the river and jet ski for the wekend. Need some thinking time. I'll let you know on the 4th of 2002.

Larry! Don't make a decision until you talk to me!! I have a Silver 2001 that I'm looking to sell. I'm in San Diego too. It has a Retrax bed cover and Wet Okole black/gray seat covers, mechanically stock and running perfectly. 12k miles. Price negotiable!

L's are tuff trucks. New you get to do all the ******* of it, used you dont know exactly what has been done. Either way the hammer will be down!!!

What you can afford & the price yo get it for should be the real factors!!!

If i didn't already own one, i would buy an 01. But if you plan on modding it to run 11,s...then i would have to look into a used 99-00 as you will need the 7-8 k difference for mods. This is assuming you can get an 01 or 02 for 29k and a 99-00 for 21-22k.

OK, I'm back from the Colorado River weekend.
Thanks for all the great info!
Ollie, Give me a call or e-mail me or get in touch some how. I have been on that out of work deal at times. A silver 01 is OK.

Kearny Mesa Ford called already while I was at the river and they have a 2002 RED. JC was the caller and he just said sticker. So I'll touch with Sarge. I have purchased my last 4 Ford trucks from Drew and thay have always been right, But they have a Blue one.

Happy New Year!!!
I took the Ford powered Samurai C-4 out for a 6 hour sand dune and rock climb on Saturday and it never missed a beat. What a gas. My new 35" super swampers work so good. And tops was that my wife actually enjoyed herself!

Thanks again.

Just know what your buying

I bought my 2000 Lightning in August for about 5k less than msrp and got them to take my explorer in trade which I owed lots on. Truck was mint with 2500 miles on it. Dealer said it belonged to a car collecter who only bought svt and special limited edition vehicles and was just traded in. He came to buy a T bird that wasn't on the floor yet, so left with the Lightning. Traded it in when the T birds arrived. The fact that they didn't have the title yet from ford verified half their story, carfax and a little research verified the rest. Test drive it and bring it to your local mechanic to check out. Best thing is to bring a lightning friend from this board with you who has some knowledge if possible. I see alot of used lightnings for sale around here. Alot of it is their eyes are bigger than their wallets, or they realize it isn't as much as a versitile vehicle as they though- kids, passengers, payload, towing, hazardous weather driving..... Good luck.

1 last thing-these trucks do hold their value. Unless what your looking at has really high miles, most of what you'll see will be at a minimum of about 26k and up.

Doug - I showed my truck to Larry the next day. I haven't heard from him yet, so he must be in quite a quandry. I might be on the verge of a new job that'll let me keep it though, so either way might work out okay. If I do sell it, I'll probably get another one when the day comes that I feel secure in a well-paying job. I'm a perl programmer, by the way.
