Line Mod Valve only??!!??

I was wondering, if I got this, and only this done, what kind of improvements would I see in daily driving?

Will I start chirping 2nd?
Will I void the warranty on the tranny?
Will that 8cyl - 4cyl. fart drop disappear on the shifts?
Will it improve times?

sorry for the 20 questions; well, 5!

thanks,JC

Fellas,

The line mod (or PSP/Factory Tech's valve body) will chirp the 1-2 shift at WOT. With either of the above the line pressure is increased so the shift happens both faster and harder although the shifts will feel relatively the same under normal driving.

My guess is that Ford may be able to void your tranny warranty with either but they would have to do some serious snooping (comparing your pieces to stock pieces) to figure it out. It appears that Ford, as of late, has been finding all kinds of reasons to void warranties and this would certainly do it. However, one benefit is that the tranny clutches should wear less because the shifts are quicker and there is less heat built-up during shifts, so in a way it helps the tranny.

The "fart" will not disappear since the cylinder cut-out is a function of the PCM. The only way around that one is through the use of a chip - which will most definitely void your warranty if left on before taking your trcuk to the dealer.

Lastly, if it improves times at all it's going to be by a marginal amount. The shifts are quicker so it may be good for a few thousandths but that would be tough to quantify.

Hope that helps,

Dan

Excellent info......thanks. So I guess, if in fact something were to go wrong that I had to take it in for warranty work, I can have the line mod valve uninstalled? Is this correct? Or is it the type of thing that once you install it, it becomes part of the tranny "for life" so to speak?

thanks again,
JC

MiamiWhiteSVT-L,

You can yank the line mod valve out. Check out http://diablosport.com/fordvalinst.html for install directions. To remove it for warranty work you would just swap the original with the non-factory line mod valve using the same directions. The only issue you may run into is if you use a 4x4 tranny pan and filter (which a lot of people are doing since the 4x4 pan has a drain plug and the stock L's pan does not). I cannot imagine Ford could void your warranty for using the 4x4 pan and filter since it is a Ford part and you could claim it was installed under the guise of it being easier to drain tranny fluid.

Dan

P.S. You'll need an in.-lb. torque wrench and 8mm and 10mm sockets that will fit that wrench. The bolts and nuts are both torqued to 80 in.-lb.'s (not 60 as listed on the web site above) and the tranny pan bolts can be torqued to between 13-15 ft.-lb.s' . Also, if you are doing the 4x4 pan and filter then just take a small punch and punch a hole in the original pan and let the fluid drain for an hour or so before starting. You should also wear crappy clothes and have lots of shop towels handy for fluid clean-up. And make sure you refill with Mercon III and not V tranny fluid.

I think Johnny sells one for $80 and Jim's is $99 (or $89 with a chip). The PSP/Factory Tech valve body is $200 if I am not mistaken and that basically would allow to drop the stock valve body and replace it with the new valve body which has the line mod valve and some new springs.

How does the level 10 shift kit differ from the line valve mod? Which one would be the best one to get if you plan on leaving the truck mostly stock otherwise?

The Level 10 (aside from being overpriced in my opinion) has the line mod valve and three new springs that replace the stock springs in the valve body (essentially what the Factory Tech valve body gives you although Factory Tech/Greg's has a few more small springs in it - and wouldn't require you to swap out the springs since his is a straight replacement valve body). If you're considering a full shift kit, and opinions differ on whether you need springs to compensate for the higher line pressure, I would recommend going the PSP/Factory Tech route.

The line mod valve was one of the first things that I did to my truck and was probably one of the best mods thus far from a fun standpoint. Getting on this pig in first would guarantee a nice big bark at the 1-2 shift (even in a stock truck at the time), which was good for some stares from people driving next to you!

Wink

You guys didn't believe any of my crap did you? See Peter, if you say it in a convincing enough fashion then people will believe you!

Just kidding...I always do a ton of research before doing anything to any of my vehicles, so I know more about L trannies than I ever wanted to. Now if I could just figure out how to port and polish these heads...
