Engine Noise after oil change
Engine Noise after oil change
Yep,
I assuming it's the same noise several others have heard after changing oil. I went with 5w-20 and the Motorcraft filter, filled the filter before putting it on and added 6 qts. of oil. It don't make sense. I have owned a lot of auto's and performed maintenance on every one, but a knock in the engine after a oil change is a new one on me. Almost sounds like a slight wristpin knock. It appears to go away after the RPM's come up. Did any of you guys that have had the same problem ever come up with an answer? I would really like to know.
Thanks,

Thanks,
ok, i just wanted to post this to possibly let people with Lightnings know that maybe its not only them. the other day i did an oil change on a mazda pick up truck. its basically the exact same truck as a ranger which is made by ford. i think mazda B series and the ford ranger are made on the same assembly line, and i believe the motor in this mazda is a ford motor. ok anyway, this guy had a ranger before this and traded it in for this truck which he bought used, it has about 45k miles on it, with no engine noise when it came in for the oil change. i do all this families repair work and oil changes. he left it for the oil change and i did it and let it down, filled the oil and started it up and there it was, a noise that WAS NOT there before. the first thing that popped into my head was reading about this on this board. i could not believe it, i had finally experienced it for myself. it sounded like a rattley noise almost like something fell down in the valve cover but coming right frm inside the motor. someone had once described it as shaking a paint can , how u hear the mixing ball, that is exactly how it sounded when i started it and the noise DID NOT go away. i was thinking to myself, how am i gonna explain this to the owner that it is not someting i did. luckily he picked it up, hoped in and drove away, i have seen him a few times since then and he did not mention anything to me, THANK GOD. but this was not the trucks first oil change, and not the first time i changed it, this was the 2nd time i changed it since he owned it and he bought it used. i have no idea, but i thought i would let you guys know. next time he comes in, im gonna write down what model truck it was and year and motor size. Mike
I changed the oil at 1350 miles. If you crawl up under the front of the truck you can tell that is coming from directly insde the oil pan. I have done a search of several forums and this problem is wide spread with Lightning owners. There is something wrong in the design of the oiling system with these engines that is causing a sarvation for oil after changing. I'm taking mine to the Ford dealer today and if I get the pattern statement "this is normal, cannot dulpicate", I will get rid of the SOB and get something else. I'm not going to drive a piece s**t that knocks.
VA, I went through the same ***** w/ my 01!Was the 5/20 synthetic or mineral base oil? If you filled the filter & added 6qts The engine is over full.BTW the BOSS is awsome!Brian

UPDATE ON ENGINE NOISE AFTER OIL CHANGE:
Well I took my truck to the Ford/SVT dealer today and had the Service Manager and a Tech listen to the marble sound coming from inside the oil pan. What they said is properly not going to surprise a lot of you. They said that the noise was normal. I said, bulls**t, it is not normal. They further stated (as they were looking at each other) that these engine were designed to make a little noise. I said then why didn't it make that noise prior to changing the oil. At this point they just stood there stairing at each other. I then requested that they schedule an appointment with a factory rep to have a listen. They didn't think it was necessy, but agreeded to set it up for next week.
When I returned home, I called a friend of mine, who builds stock car engines for a living and ask him if he would be willing to meet with me and the factory rep to also listen to the engine noise. He said he would , and requested I get the specs on the enternal clearences for the 5.4 lightning engine. Do any of you guys know where I can gain access to this information? I would really appreciate it. Will keep ya updated.
Thanks for the space.
