i used to do it a few years back. i started out buying a kit that came with an ok car, a controller, oil, tire glue, and some other basic stuff. i eventually upgraded to one of those wing bodies and a faster engine. it was pretty quick. i dont know if it compares to your little L but it did fly off the track and shoot across the store quite frequently(not straight away, a track w/ turns and stuff), it was pretty funny. i actually just found it a few weeks ago and would like to get back into the sport but the place near me closed so i dont know where to go anymore

later

lightning r/c cars

tamiya corp. and hpi racing make electric lightning kits. the tamiya lightning is a true to life spec of the L. but the hpi rs4 lightning is an all wheel belt drive touring car chassis. this kit you build and you can really mod it up. just like the real thing only smaller. irace this lightning in an indoor touring car class. there is nothing like seing something like this hang a corner on a carpeted track like we do at about 35 - 40 mph with a mod engine of course.
