Race Gas

I have never been to the track and have a question about gas. I know that with multi-program chips there is usually a street program and a strip program. usually, in the stip program, you need race gas. when you say race gas, do you mean just an addative like octane boost, or brand new gas? if you have to put in brand new gas, how do you get the old gas out? do you just mix in the pump gas with the race gas? or is there a way to drain out the old gas?

thanks for the help

Typically, the strip/race side of a chip will have more aggressive timing and other characteristics that requires running gas of a higher octane to prevent it from detonating (a big-big no-no). I've heard a lot of people say that using a high quality "octane booster" works fine, which may be all that's available in your area. However, depending on what track you finally decide to go to, and how "serious" they are about racing there, they may/most likely will have a "gas shack" where you can buy the real deal- race gas (and don't forget to bring a gas can or extra $30, because they will NOT pump it directly from the 55 gallon drum into your truck). Up here at New England Dragway where a bunch of us run from the Spring to late Fall, they offer upwards of a dozen different octane ratings and blends of race gas, from 102 to 118+, and in both leaded and unleaded varieties. As others will (hopefully) tell you, make sure you remember to run only UNleaded gas, because leaded gas will ruin your catalytic converters reaallllllll quick. And the other thing to keep in mind is that you don't have to go overboard with the octane you choose. Chances are you will be running a "mild" strip side like most (reasonable...lol) people do, in which case a low 100 octane (~104) will be plenty. You can mix the race gas directly with the 93 you already got in your tank, but keep in mind that the less 93 you have to mix your $$$ race gas with, the higher overall octane rating you'll end up having (...so plan ahead and show up at the track with only ~3-4 gallons of 93 octane in your tank, and buy another 3-4 gallons of race gas to mix with it). I think that a quality strip program is good for about ~one-tenth of a second (0.1s) over the street side, but like with everything else, your real-world results may vary.

Race gas is fun to run...but laughing gas is better. (lol)

Hope this helps.

Later...

Like MXRacer said, most good tracks will sell gas on site. Mix about 5gallons of unleaded race gas to any where from 1/4 to 1/2 tank of pump 93. This should keep your from pinging. If you hear pinging, add a gallon or two more.

We use Torrco Concentrated Race Fuel instead of race gas. $15 for a 32oz can that will take 5gallons of 93 to 110oct, and 10gallons of 93 to 105oct. The only down site is that it will color the plugs, but they are cleaned up after a tank or two of normal pump gas.

MX:

At 'my' track, Silver Dollar Raceway, they have gas pumps(3--100u/l, 104 & 110 leaded) and will pump directly into your vehicle. I understand you said "barrels"--must be a safety factor with them?

Btw, a few weeks ago, I 'had'(the unleaded pump hose was damaged and I was almost out of gas--didn't want to leave the track for 'stock' gas) to buy 2 gals of leaded race gas. Oh, did I worry about the cats-but no problems--I've put several thousand miles on her since then. But, don't do it --I was 'lucky'.
