Put me on the list to. I have the diesel sound as well. It also sounds like a bunch of marbles rolling around in a can. When I first change the oil it sounds the worst. After I drive it a while it starts to quite up. If it sits for a hour or two and I start it it is noisy. As it warms up it starts to quite up. I am thinking piston slap. Others have thought rod knock. But as I increase the rpm's I really don;t here it. If it was a rod it would get louder.Just my thought. I guess I am not alone. Bob.

synthetic

You guys are putting the synthetic oil in way to soon. The L motor takes a little longer to break in than other motors, about 6 or 7k miles. The rings are not even seated good yet and your getting blow-by and yeaup see the smoke. Here the noise. If your one of the few that put synthetic in early and your not having problems than your lucky or your motor was broken in faster than others. I have always heard Do Not Put Sythetic in until you reach 8 to 10K.

usahooters May have a good point there.

I did my first 3 oil changes using Valvoline 5w-20 oil.
( 2k then 5k, then 8k all on dino oil.)

Then on my 4th oil change, 11k I switched to 5w-30 mobil one. I have never had the ticking noise, so maybee usahooters is onto something. Maybee there engines need a little more time to fully seat the rings.

I am now at just over 25k and so far so good.

Don,

I did the exact same thing as you. I used the suggested 5w-20 for the first 3 oil changes before switching over to 5w-30 synthetic Mobil 1. No ticking noises.

Don't put Synthetic in your truck until it's broken in!

hmmmm

Its not the Ford approves or disapproves, they do not test these engines with synthetic so they don't recommend using it. This doesn't mean its not good for you to use it, I intend on changing over to it myself but after my third or fourth change.

If synthetic is bad for the engine why do major car manufacturers use synthetic straight from the plant? ie corvettes, and HP German cars.

who said it was bad

Its not bad, its super slick and it can make it hard for the rings to seat in some engines. Have you seen the rings that are in these engines?

The vehicles shipped with synthetic oils were designed, built and tested with synthetics.

My '00 didn't get synthetic until the 3rd oil change, at 9000 miles, and it's quiet.
