Question Tranny questions for Factory Tech

OK, here's my situation. I've got an '01 completely stock. I'm going to get a chip, filter, 2# pulley, and perhaps some slicks. I'm planning to hit the strip no more than once a month. Given that the chip will remove the 1-2 shift fart and perhaps boost line pressure, what mods do I need to make to the tranny to give it a longer life expectancy? Should I ask the tuner to leave the line pressure alone and rely on just tranny mods? Any advice would be appreciated.

BTW, I did do a search; but I wanted your opinion with my specific needs in mind.

Do I need to do any transmission upgrade for just a chip? What's the reason, everybody seems to want to spin their tires on shifts?

Thanks in advance,
Edward

1. Pure intimidation
2. any decent driver skill can bark the tires on a manual car, but to do on automatic says you have power.

I am at this moment talking to Sal about him taking over distribution of my Full Blown Monster tranny, there's some details left to work out, but it looks like I'll be able to offer the almost full monty for $1,500 w/exchange and with the 6 plate ball bearing coast clutch for under $2,000, prices that just wipe out the comperable Level 10 and are actually cheaper than going to a dealer and buying a new stock tranny. It's just gonna be easier for me to do this than to offer internal mods and trust the cheapest mechanic in your area to install them correctly.

As to the original question,

If you get a chip and filter, you need a shift kit, mine or someone's, but you need one if you take out the 1-2 torque reduction

I would leave the line pressure stock, but some people add a little with a chip, it'll firm up the shift, I think it causes other problems, long term, but my opinion is far from unanimous on that, so it's up to what you like. Get a shift kit and drive it for awhile before you get a chip, and advise your tuner what you want.

If you do any more than a chip and filter, you need to dig into the box and upgrade clutches, more than you should prolly do unless you're a qualified tranny mechanic (a box man, inside joke), but I'm trying to make that easier and cheaper by offering the deal I mentioned above, but if you want to do any serious mods, you need to address the gearbox as opposed to just teh valve bodies and line pressure.

I am also considering a chip and find this info very useful. . .

So are you guys saying that if a chip is installed and the 1-2 fart is eliminated, that a shift kit is a must? If a shift kit does not reduce the torque, then how will this help? If the tranny is not capable of taking the torque w/o the fart, should the chip be programmed to leave the fart?

Pulley ?'s

Factory_Tech,
So do you consider a pulley a "major mod" that would require more work on the tranny to keep it from experiencing technical difficulties? Thanks for the help.

Pulleys, maybe, I'm not real sure how much more they add, but if yo're running over 500 ft lbs of torque you're pulling more than the tranny was designed for. A PS Diesel is detuned for the Auto because the stock tranny won't hold up under the torque, so long term my standard is the 500 ft/lbs or more means you need to work on the clutches.

As to the 1-2 shift question, shortening duration (what a shift kit does) reduces wear on the friction plates and lowers tempature, so adding a shift kit reduces some of the strain. When you open a tranny up, I can tell if you have the drop removed with a chip by the condition of the intermediate plates, you have about 5 years worth of wear on a year old tranny....

Hope this helps,

G

Should I have a tranny built before adding mods? What is the worst thing that can happen to my tranny if I don't have it built before adding the power?
I guess what I am trying to say is if I have a tranny in good condition why should I rip it out and have it built? Should I just wait until it doesn't shift well?
