WTF is up with no more 92 octane here in Phoenix?
All of you 91'ers out there,
After speaking to a few folks in the know I have been told that standard octane boosters (104+, NOS, etc.) will wreak havoc on the L's fuel filter in short order. Torco Race Fuels makes a product called Accelerator which is not an octane booster but a race fuel concentrate (it is essentially a highly-concentrated form of the "stuff" they put in race fuel to raise the octane rating) - http://www.torcoracefuels.com/ACCEL%201.htm. I spoke to a rep from Torco and was told a 32 oz. can, when mixed with 10 gallons of 93 octane gas, will raise the octane rating to 104. One 32 oz. can when mixed with 20 gallons of 93 octane will raise the octane rating to 97 so a can of this in a tank of AZ, CA or NV gas should raise 91 octane gas to about 95 or so. You could also mix half a can per fill-up and end up with what should be just about 93 octane gas. I have not been able to get pricing but I have a call in to the distributor in Las Vegas as we speak. I will post what I find out regarding pricing later today. My guess is it is significantly cheaper than race gas at $4.50 a gallon and it will still allow you to run a chip without having to utilize a detuned program to compensate for bad gas. I will also inquire about any group purchase or bulk purchase discounts if anyone is interested.
Thanks,
Dan

I live in phoenix also and last week my truck died. I made a post telling about it and how I had to push it home. It kept on dying. I took my PSP chip out and the truck works great now. My truck is running good without the chip so I haven't thougt about putting it back in. Do you think the lower gas in phoenix had any thing to do with my truck dying because of the psp chip. I never had a slight problem with my truck before. THANKS
Sovich,I live in chandler. My PSP 4-way left me stranded last week also.I took it out and it runs fine.Havn't had a chance to call Sal yet ,I don't know if the whole thing is fried or maybe just needs to be re-burnt.Hve you called them?-Dave.
avgas is down to $2 a gallon most everywhere I fly. the most common variety is 100 octane leaded; it will kill your cats, but i bet alot of yall dont run them anyway. at most little airports you could just pull your truck up to the pump and nobody will care... just stay off the runways!
Sovich, try cleaning the contacts with some liquid contact cleaner. It's probably the contacts, and not the chip itself.
I notice that after 8,000 to 10,000 miles, my truck begins to misfire slightly under very light loads. If I remove the chip, and clean the contacts, and reseat it, the misfire goes away.
Whenever you have electricity passing through a set of contacts, you get some carpon buildup. This will cause a loss of performance, or complete shutdown.

The Torco Accelerator is $13.95 for a 32 oz. can which in theory could treat two full tanks of gas (a half can in a tank of 91 octane will yield about a 93-94 octane rating). A case of it runs $83.70 for six 32 oz. cans. The company doesn't yet have a distributor in AZ so I am having them send me the paperwork (since there is no minimum to order). Distributor pricing is $65.34 per six can case for up to nine cases and at ten cases the pricing drops to $61.14 per case. Even at $13.95 and a buck or two shipping this stuff works out to be about the same if not a little less than 104+ or NOS octane boosters. I have ordered two cans to test in my L and I think I may have found one more "victim" in the Phoenix area.

Struck, It's cheaper to have the chip reburned. If you have 2 or 4 way, jsut have one of the settings set up for 91 winter gas. If you experience detonation on hot Phoenix days during the summer, it will probably work in those days too.
Do you have 76 Racing gas available in Ariz? If the pinging gets bad, I put in a couple of gallons and that will susally get me through a bad tankful. It's a little price, but it is 100 octane unleaded.

Jay,
It would be cheaper and easier to go the chip route but what fun is that? Not unlike everyone else here I would like to squeeze every last horsepower out of this thing regardless of cost or convenience. I also noticed on the pumps the other day here in AZ that we have oxygenated fuel from November to March if I am not mistaken and fuel enhanced with ethanol for a few months prior to that. Living in Phoenix I would be running the bad fuel program all of the time since come end of April or beginning of May we start getting into the 100-degree weather.

Struck, you have exactly the same fuel as we do now. If you drive the miles that I do, you would go broke using octane booster.
You are right about the Hp, but I was able to squeeze 385 Hp out of a 2# pulley and Swanson custom tuned chip. I don't think that the octane will have a major effect on horsepower, unless the engine does get into detonation, which will kill power and parts.
I've found that using Shell 91, has exibited less detonation. Go figure. That's why I switched to 76 in the first place.
Eventually, any gas that flows through the Common Carrier pipelines, will be the same octane. Eventually, any state that gets it's gas through those pipes will be using 91.

Struck in AZ,
Hey were you referring to me as the other "victim"? I know we can get Yoda in on this too. Hopefully I could twist your arm and buy one of those cans off of you. I think this may be our answer to our detonation problem. Heck, this will only work out to 35 cents a gallon at the list price, so that is not bad at all. And with as little as you and I drive these things, it's certainly not gonna break the bank.
In regards to the post from jrm1493 about the avgas. Well I've been buying it for years and the cheapest was $2.29 (years ago), it's more like $2.79 these days. Even though it is called 100LL (low lead), he is absolutely right that it has a high lead content and would destroy the cats. As far as the airport dispensing in your vehicle--no way. The law prohibits dispensing into a vehicle. At the Scottsdale Airpark the guys dispense from the trucks and we cannot buy at the pump on the tarmac unless we can key in an aircraft tail number.
