Question oil change / diesel sound .....

My 01 L has 9000 mi on it, i have changed the oil @ 1000, 3000, 6000, 9000. Everytime i change it , i get the marble in the can sound for about 200 mi and then it goes away. It's the loudest around the passenger side wheel well. For the first three changes i used 5w-20, this time i used 5w-30 thinking the 5w-30
would help. Still makes the noise, this mourning the noise is almost gone. My truck is stock and i'm using regular oil anybody else have this happen ? anybody have any ideas why this is happening ?

Mine did that the first start when I changed to regular oil. Next times I used Mobil1 5-30 and filled the filter up and no noise

This has been discussed before.

I'm no expert but I believe what is happening is Tappet(spelling sucks) noise. OHC motors don't have Lifters they have Tappets.
The noise occurs in my opion at start up and especially after an oil change and all the oil drains from out of the heads. The Tappets then clatter at start up till the oil reaches them.

Fritz, Your not alone. I have the same problem. Only mine takes about 700 miles before it starts to quite up and go away. Anoying I know. If you listen down by the oil pan it is really loud. I have been waiting for over a year for someone to come up with an answer for this problem. Bob.

I've been racking my brain on this and can't come up with a logical answer.
I don't want to live with it and i don't want to take it to the dealer. So next oil change i guess i go with synthetic and see what happens

Can any of you engine experts shed some light on this ? , i'm going to start lemon law proceedings and need some backup. I have been buying Fords for thirty years , and had my share of problems. But i have NEVER changed the oil on one of my vehicles and have it make this kind of noise. I really thought i got lucky with this truck. I would have never thought just changing the oil would screw things up.

Just switched to Motorcraft 5W 30 synthetic and used the factory specified Motorcraft filter[has an anti-siphon valve in it]and my marble noise has greatly decreased.Only for about 1-2 sec. on start-up after sitting for several hrs or overnite.Ican get you the filter part # if you need it.TTL. -Dave.

My advice is to make sure you use the Motorcraft filter.

The filter can hold allmost if not a full quart of oil. When I change mine I fill the filter, let it sit for a minute, fill it some more, and repeat about 5 times. It is amazing how much oil the filter will suck up.

Once I got to my 3rd oil change I switched to Mobil One 5W-30 and have had no noise.

I guess i'll give synthetic a try. I really like this truck and don't want to get rid of it. But i just don't understand how changing the oil could start this chain of events. Maybe these engines like dirty oil, maybe i want everthing too perfect.

Fritz,
This may be a silly question but what brand of oil filter are you using? I use the stock Motorcraft oil filter (820S) with Mobil 1. I never get a valve train chatter after new oil changes. The Motorcraft filter uses a silicon anti-drain back valve so there is oil in the filter upon start up. Maybe give it a try.

I have been using the Motocraft filter from the start, plus i don't think its valve
train chatter. If i pop the hood everthing sounds normal, close the hood and stand by the passenger side wheelwell all you can hear is the marble in the can thing. On top of that i talked to the service manager at my local Ford dealer, he called the Romeo (sp) engine plant. They gave him the old teflon on the piston thing and i would have to live with it. Thanks for the replys

Use 10W30 and it will go away, the 5W30 is so light it doesn't quiet anything. I use Syntex 10W30 and no noise anymore. It also stays cleaner longer than the Mobil 1 which looks like burnt oil after about 500 miles.
29000 miles, no blown motor running 12.12 on motor and spray nitrous when I really want to get your attention.

You know what? It works too
