Question One-Two Upshift Question

I was riding in my 2001 L yesterday, as a passenger, with my nephew driving. He nailed it and (with the passenger side window down) I heard what I can only decribe as a "fart sound" come from the exhaust during the first to second gear shift. Is this normal? It did it a couple of times and we quit running it hard. And, I might be just getting used to the power that it has but, it seemed to be running a little slow.

Has anybody else ever heard anything like this from theirs?

I have a few mods ordered but if there's a problem with it now, maybe I should take it into the dealer to get it checked out before I install them?

Could it possibly be the boost dump? I'm new to the Lightning experience and just learned that the boost is dumped during the upshift at WOT.

It is programed to do that. They call it a drop 4 shift. The factory programed the computer to drop 3 fuel injectors for 4 tenths of a second to reduce torque shock on the transmission on 1-2 shifts where firing on all 8 would wear the clutches and snap your head. The chips eliminate that feature and hit on all 8 cylinders.

Thumbs up

L8 Apex,

Thanks, that answers my question. I have a flip chip ordered along with a few other goodies.

?

L8 Apex,
It is my understanding the quiker the shift the least amount of wear on the clutches do to the fact there is more pressure. When it takes the trans longer to shift, whats keeping it from shifting is the clutches. It is like riding the clutch in a standard trans.

Yes and no, the quicker shifts are better, but a full torque shift (if you lose the drop) will require a shift kit or it will long term damage the clutches.

chick:

You may have misunderstood--or someone told you something in error. The boost isn't dumped at WOT--with or without a chip! It will be dumped if you over-rev and 'hit' the rev-limiter, again with or without a chip.

If you want to eliminate 'boost dumping', you can. There are two methods---1: disconnect the electical connection to the boost-dump solenoid, or 2: JDM will sell you a 'kit' that will reroute the vacuum signal to the dump(I think?) I disconnected mine a long time ago.

BlowM3,

One is hanging a little lower than the other (from the factory). I haven't messed with aligning it since I'm going to be doing some exhaust work, next week, anyway. I'll fix that then.

Dan,

I HAD misundertood the boost dump thing, like you said. I have a boost by-pass kit ordered from Mike T, along with a flip chip, breather cap, JDM Cold Air Intake Kit, Magnaflow muffler, Line Mod valve, transmission pan, and drop shackles.

I sure hope I don't have the engine problems (lean, burning of spark plugs) like I read about in another post. I'm not going to use an aftermarket pully or nitrous so I feel pretty good about the mods. I hope
