Your Opinion on Plugs

Ok Guys and Gals,
I have some performance mods in the mail on the way to my front door as we speak. A quick list is as follows:

Cold Air Induction Filter Kit,
4# lower pully,
Shift kit,
Chip calibrated for the above mods

Given the increase in boost I will get from these parts, do you recommend changing the plugs (such as NGK TR5), or are the stock plugs acceptable. I really don't want to change them unless it is strongly recommended by you all. Please give your valued opinions.
Thanks
GDG

Just look at Mystery2001's post.

With a 4# pulley and Chip I would go with the NGK's

The stock plugs suck, in my opinion

Dan's Bolt,

Yeah, I read his post previously. The jury is still out on that one. To me, sounds like a very lean condition - more of a chip calibration problem than plugs. In that particular case, I believe any plug would have fried.

My question is with a properly calibrated and tuned chip, are the stock plugs OK, or is changing them strongly recommended.

In all due respect..........

to the other opinions; I still have my original, stock plugs in. My L just rolled over the 16,000 mile mark. I have used 4 different brands(Texaco is my favorite-highest energy content) of 93 octane, octane 'adders'(?), 100 octane racin' gas--even put in 2 gals of 110-leaded in a track 'emergency' once and have had no pinging/detonation problems. My L has made close to 100 1/4 mile passes and 3 dyno runs--most of the 1/4 miles and all the dyno runs on 93 octane. I have used 3 different chips--different tuners and their different programs. I have used a 2lb pulley and a 3lb with these different chips--ramair open filter kit too. My point is; with all of these variances, there has been NO engine issues with my stock Ford plugs. Do I plan to change to NGKs in the future--sure, but not because of any disappointment with the stock plugs.

Thanks LIGHTNINROD,
Your post gives me a better feeling. Spark plugs are one area on these L's where I am still really confused. I believe am going to try the stock plugs first, surely they can't be too bad. Sure, eventually I will switch to NGK's (or equal). I just wish I could get my arms around this issue better to have a better understanding of the realities involved.

been there

Hey Godoggo, maybe this will make you feel better, I've ran NGK TR5, TR6, Autolite 103, and tomorrow I'm going to put my stock plugs back in. I'm convinced they are good enough for me. I'm running th Jl chip, shift kit, 3# pulley, and an open K&N filter. I am using Avgas to control detonation though. 93 Octane just ant enough.

I posted a question about av gas last year. It was the general concensus that the lead content of AVGAS was considerbly highter than what you would want to use. Just thought I would pass that on to you.

thanks Mark, I'm not going to recommend anyone using it but I've been an aircraft mechanic for over 16 years and I've ran it in everything that I've driven so far and it works for me. I've seen 1 or 2 others here that are in the same line of work and they use it also. A good mixture seems to be 1 gal of Avgas to every 4 gal of 93 oct. to give you right at 100. This will also dilute the lead content. 1 to 3 at the most for even higher amounts of boost.

Thanks for the input. Sunoco 104 unleaded is a 610 mile round trip. Avgas is five miles out to the airport.

My bone stock '00 L developed a very slight miss at ~8.5k miles. I pulled the plugs and found a very very small pit in the electrode. I replaced with splitfires and it went away. I put in TR6 and it ran fine, but I think the splits ran better and had better color. So, back in went the splits.
The bad news is, changed plugs 3 times in less than 13k miles. The good news is, I can do it in 1 hour and 15 minutes easily.

My opinion on plugs? Make sure to use 8 of them for a Lightning.
