Getting ready to buy my first digital camera. Would like your feedback on the following cameras. I think I have it narrowed down to 3.
Nikon Coolpix 885
Sony DSC S85
Olympus C-4040
Open to other suggestions as well.
Best place to buy?

I am also looking into a new camera to replace my 3030Z. Right now I am leaning towards the 4040Z for obvious reasons but I have taken a look at the ones you have listed. The Sony is a good camera and we have one at work but(3meg) it doesn't take as good of pictures as my 3030Z and it used Memory Stick but still a good camera. I have not use a Nikon but I am not a fan of their cameras for some reason. The take good pictures and use CF2 but that is it. I like the 4040Z because it is an simple point and shoot camera for the novice and the bells and whistles for the pro. The only down side is that it use smartmedia which has a cap of 128 meg of memory. I will have my web site up in the next day or two and you can see all the pic I have taken with the 3030Z reduced to 800X600.
The main things to remember:
1. The higher the megapixel, the better. You can do so much more with a larger picture(ie: printing, clarity, etc.)
2. Get one that uses standard memory. Sometimes Sony uses a proprietary stick.
3. Spend your $ on memory and lenses. Don't buy a warranty. Think about it.. You buy a 3 year warranty.
1st. year is covered by the manufacturer. Three years after the purchase, you can buy the same camera for 80% less. Why pay to fix an outdated camera.
4. Get a copy of PhotoShop. You can turn so-so pictures into great shots by cleaning them up.
These were done with a 4.0 megapixel with very little talent...

As far as purchasing, I've had very good luck with http://www.buydig.com
REMEMBER: Sometimes the camera's on Ebay are cheaper because they may be International versions of the same camera. They may not have the same manufacturer's warranty as a US version. Some have none...

Another good research site is Epinions.com
I have the Sony DSC-S50 and like it. Decent battery charge life.
It was the same price everywhere, but I bought at Staples because they had a free scanner offer and a free 32Mb stick after rebate offer. A great deal! I later bought a memory stick reader.

Get the Canon S300 it is a 2.1 MP camera...and can do small video clips...the clarity is excellent for the size...also it is easily fit into the pocket - and I always carry it around, what good is a camera that is big and bulky if you dont have it when you need it?

I just got the 4040, I am still learning all about it, but so far I love it.
I took a few little movies with it at the Nascar race the other weekend. The vids look pritty good, if it can capture nascar cars doing 140 mph it should be great filming the l at the track
If you want me to e-mail you a video send me a e-mail at dhco@rcn.com

I just upgraded to Olympus Ultra zoom 2100 - I wanted a BIG optical zoom ( 10X ) and I wanted to be able to take many pictures in a few seconds.. Action shots at the track require both.. THe UZ works good for that ... It is only 2.1 MP but Most of my stuff gets reduced for web anyway so 2.1 MP is still huge for me and the camera is only 499
2.1mp will allow you to make good 8x10 prints if you have a good printer. Keep in mind that if you take lots if high MP pictures you will need a CD burner to stire them cause they will me many Mb each....

Oh, another good search site is www.pricescan.com or www.pricewatch.com You'll have to use the search feature on pricewatch, I didn't see any link for cameras. Also, be sure and check when you get good prices that the product you are buying is the U.S. version. Sometimes you can get quoted the price for an international camera that might not have all the features/equipment of the U.S. version. Just FYI.
i have had the nikon coolpix 900 and the 800.they both take great pictures, easy to use, and the 800 can be bought for 350 or less.neither one has a hotshoe for a flash so indoor shots are limited.if you want to spend the money (900 plus) get the new 5000.it has the hotshoe and about 5.2 megapixels.you will need a 256 megabite or higher compact flash card to hold any pictures to amount to anything.its not out yet but i will have as soon as its out.
