Can anyone give me advice about NJ emissions testing?

I am looking to buy a '93 Lightning with a built 351 with a supercharger. My question is what happens when I don't pass emissions testing? And more importantly, when after repeatedly trying it still fails and I can't get the truck to pass? Am I out of luck and can't drive the truck?

Here's what I understand about the "enhanced" testing in NJ.
If you fail, you have to get an estimate to repair from a "certified" repair center and if you go over a certain amount predetermined by the idiots at dmv, you can get a waiver to just have the idle test instead of the dyno test run on your truck. This waiver is only good for the one inspection, as you'll have to go thru it again in two years, and then if you can't pass either test, they'll revoke your truck's registration and you can't drive it. Bull@#$@ isn't it?

The fools at the inspection station won't know what they are looking at under the hood of your truck, all they are looking for is the engine size and for any obvious disconected stuff.

If you have the blower, but no cam and other severe work done, it should pass, as they only run the vehicle to about 15 mph in whatever gear the trans will get up to. In the case of manuals it'll be done in 3rd for the most part. A customer of our shop with a blown stang with longtubes passed, we just wrapped the headers before he went to keep the O2s good and hot.

There are places that can "pass" your truck, several landscapers we deal with know them. and they pass some pretty nasty stuff too.

I hate emissions testing. If they want to clean up some of the air polution caused by vehicles then why don't they get stricter with the buses that run down the parkway to AC all day long.

Dave check the exhaust system good if your that worried. If need be replace anything questionable before you go for inspection.

My dad has a 95 L with a 9# Vortech S-trim and FMS Mass Air. This truck passes with flying colors. I have heard that the Mass Air helps but as long as your chip is not running the truck too rich you will have no problem. If you fail by a little, try some of that stuff in a bottle that you put in your tank to help pass. Hope this helps.

If anyone is interested his L website (one page) is: Dad's 95 L
