Angry My Truck has a rare disease

Its called "Haveth No Secondgeareth"!, Found out today after taking my truck to the dealership for a checkout. They looked the truck over and drove it and said my transmission has "no second gear". I mean... 2nd gears dont just fall out! At least as far as I know. It all started when I was driving about 3 months ago, I went to go accelerate and instead of shifting at the WOT shift which for my truck was about 5,700 rpm, instead it leaped all the way to 6000rpm! and didnt shift till I completely let off the gas! But soon after that about 3 days later it started shifting again. The truck was fine for about 3 months after that. But then it started up again. So I thought it was my chip I took that out. it did the same thing, I called JL and asked him if he knew what was up and i told him exactly what was wrong. He said it sounds like the transmission and we agreed to have it taken to the dealership. Well now I found out i need a new tranny luckly the warranty is taking care of everything. So now im without my truck for another week

How many miles do you have on your truck? This sounds like the exact same thing that had happened to us when the stock fuel filter cloged. You should change the filter every 10,000 miles on these things.

Well, at least you get a free rental while they have it! I hope its not a bad one...
Let us know what they say about the internals of the tranny if you find out.

I went through the exact same thing w/ my 00 L. My second gear went out. I had the exact same problems, it hitting 6,000 rpm and everything. Ford replaced my tranny under warranty and never said anything about it!

Thumbs down

Yep, had the same thing happen to my '00 at about 8500 miles. It blew 2nd gear. I think SVT tells the dealerships to not open them up, just send it in for a new one. Funny thing...mine went out again 100 miles later. Another wrinkle...the tranny I had go out had a 4x4 pan on it. Makes me wonder if I got the "incorrect" tranny, or they tried to fix mine...

Slvrbullet: Glad to hear that the dealer is taking care of it even though you have all those mods. Did they mention anything?

I just had second gear go out on my '01 at 1508 miles. The dealership tore it down and said the one-way clutch had "rolled over". They installed a new one-way clutch and drum. I'm not to happy about having my transmission being tore apart and repaired, but the dealership said Ford could not get a Lightning transmission off of the assembly line because there are only a certain # built for the Lightnings. I'm sure there are extra built.

Looks like I need to put more mile on my truck to see if it will go out again before the warranty expires.

Hey Todd,

Did WR Ford do the repairs? How does it feel now, and how long did it take them to fix it?

Sammy,

Yes, WR Ford repaired it and it took about 3 days. I have not noticed any difference in shifting from when it I bought it. Since new, 95% of all starts are at full throttle!!!!

Damn...mine started doing this earlier this week. I'm taking it in tomorrow for a long list of stuff, tranny included. Glad to see I'm not alone.

Same thing happened to me after I put my JDM lower blower pulley on the truck..I had no second gear in WOT...but other than that it worked great. Took it to SVT Dealer and they said the second gear was broken in pieces. They too replaced the tranny under warranty...I didnt have a chip in it yet
