Question What woudl the effect be?

If I put these tires on my truck:

295/35YR18 (26.2" Diam)
345/35YR18 (27.4" Diam)

I know of course, this would require new rims...but what do you think this would do to handling on the street?

(I'm trying to figure out a way to get away from Goodyear tires but keep'm wide)

Dan - my guess is that it would handle better for Auto-X then your current tires. Would look pretty cool with the larger tires in the rear. Just don't drive on any roads with potholes.

By the way check this out. I took those pics on saturday.

345 huh? Those are some big meats. My guess would be a bit of understeer? I'm by no means a suspension expert but i would imagine it takin alot of time for some diff action with Godzilla rear tires.

Most will depend on the rubber compound. The lower profile should make the truck turn in quicker, but only if the side way is stiffer. Wider isn't allways better. You will lose some top end due to the "gear" change and addition rolling resistance. Looking at least a 12" wide wheel in the rear (I haven't found any yet). Good luck on wet roads.

Okie...thanks. I know there is some pitfalls to wide tires (hydro-resistance), but I do think they look really sweet.

Those 345's fit on 11.5" rims, which I know I can get...but I'm still rummaging ideas... I think I'm still going to go grab a set of Pirellei Rosso's, which are a little thinner (275 I think), but I don't know yet...wide tires look so great.

I wish S03's came in a size that fit on our truck.

Guys, thats not a lower profile tire. There would be significantly more sidewall height, as well as width when comparing a 295 35 and a 345 35. You see, 35 (aspect ratio) is the percentage of the width that is the height. So, 35% of 345 is 120.75mm which is the height of the sidewall. The old one was 35% of 295 with is 103.25mm. Thats why people go to lower aspect ratios. Example: a 345 "30" would be 103.5, pretty much the same tire height as the 295, but just wider.

None of this takes into consideration the rim width, which can make a difference. But if you have the proper width wheel for each of these different tires, then you are going to want to look for a 30series tire instead of a 35, otherwise, your L will look even more jacked up in the rear.

Good luck
Jeff

TruBlu02 - you are correct but confused. I don't think Dan meant he is going from 295/35 to 345/35. He is talking about going from 295/45 (stock tires) to 295/35 in the front and 345/35 in the rear, Dan am I right?

The stock 295/45 has a sidewall of 132.75mm, 295/35 would have considerably less sidewall of 103.25mm. And the 345/35 would still have less sidewall of 120.75mm.

Ahh, I see.. Confused is a constant state of mind for me.

Thanks for the correction.

Yep -- Captains on the mark. The rear would still be 1" shorter in diameter then stock...with the front being almost 2" shorter. Thats why I was wondering how I'd be impacting my handling. (and how the gearing would be chagned with 1" shorter on the rear)

if your tire diameter is too far off from front to back, your abs will start acting wierd, and throwing codes, or even shut off.
