Question on "final drive".

If a sales brochure says that the final drive is 3.06:1, what does that tell you?

That it's set up for low end torque, top end speed, or?????

Final drive is highest gear (overdrive) x axle ratio. If you know what the overdrive gear ratio is, divide it into the final drive ratio to get the rear axle ratio. I'm not sure what the overdrive ratio on the L is, but as an academic example I'll use 0.63

0.63 x 3.55 = 2.24:1 or 0.63 x 3.73 = 2.35:1

That is actually fairly high for a V8, but low for a 4 cylinder.

If the vehicle in question has a high axle ratio, say 4.86:1, it can still be economical with a 0.63 overdrive to get 3.06:1 (if it's a 4 cyl)
