2001 I/C Leak

I put out a post a month or so ago about an I/C leak I was having with my 2001 truck. It started a wave of concern as many worried that the fix they were getting for their problems were destined for more problems.
Sorry it's taken me so long to update but I only recently got time to put my truck in the shop for a fix. I too was worried, but I have better news to report. Apparently, although my truck was built in May of 2001 the old I/C unit was used instead of the revised unit. I had the same hairline crack that has been a problem on ealier units. My dealer replaced the entire unit, and never even made mention on the various mods I've made. My story then has a happy ending. I hope this soothes the nerves of all of you who have had the "fix" done to their trucks.
Thanks,
Terry

I thought that the intercooler for the 99 & 00's would only fit those years? How did they stick the old intercooler in the new intake?
My truck was made in late March '01...I hope I don't have the old intercooler, if it is even possible.

The '99/00 IC has a different bolt pattern and will not fit the '01. No flame intended, maybe just maybe your dealer lies

Old style cooler won't work/fit in the 01 lower intake. Something fishy with your dealer.

Would ford be that stupid? Wouldn't that leave them open for all types of law suits? Sounds like common dealer BS.

You all have a good point. All I know for sure is that I have a new unit on my truck. The old one did have a hairline crack in it. The numbers being diferrent is something I cannot prove one way or another. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if this one holds up or not. I have 20,000 miles on my truck and everything else is great. I'll let you know if there are anymore problems.

Does any one know what the stock plugs 'look' like if the i/c is leaking coolant into the intake charge?

Keep in mind the intercooler was redesigned NOT because of the leak, but for better performance...

And the bolt pattern isn't what is causing the leak (most likely).
Therefore, it wouldn't be too far fetched to assume that they made a few "old" design intercoolers with the "new" blot pattern...!?

Maybe the "new" design wasn't quite ready, and Ford used the "old" design with a different bolt pattern.?!

Did you get to keep the parts? Do you have any idea how many cooling tubes were on both the leaking one and the replacement?

I had understood that there were more cooling "ribs" on the "redesign"....?

The bolt pattern is on the blower, adapter plate, and lower intake. No bolts on the cooler itself. More than likely the sevice writer has no idea what he is talking about. They probably replaced your 01 cooler with a new 01 cooler.

I talked to Chris Weisberg (sp?) at Magnuson (before he left), about the '99-'00 vs. '01 intercoolers since he knows a lot of people at Ford, SVT, SVE, Roush, Eaton, and Garrett (who makes the intercooler). He explained that the '01 intercooler redesign was done because of the leak, not to improve performance. The performance gain from the bigger core was a separate issue but was incorporated at the same time.

And that's straight from the horse's mouth.
