Speedin Bob...aka..."who was that guy in the silver www.JLPerf.com Lightning?"
what about Bob?......Speedin Bob, that is?
Folks, all I can say is Speedin Bob was 'da man on the twisty track at Indianapolkis Raceway Park on Saturday. Time after time, I kept hearing, "say, who the hell is that guy driving around all those cobra's on the track in that silver lightning, with the www.johnnylightningperf.com logo on the tailgate?
Way to go speedy!....magnificent job.... Oh, did I mention that Speedin Bob also set the course Autocross record. Now to put this in perspective. There were (30) SVT Cobra's, (2) Cobra "R's", (2) SVT Contours (14) Lightnings and an "Factory SVT experimental Expedition", which was basically an Expedition with Lightning motor, drivetrain and suspension. The competition included Autocross, 2.5 mile Roadcourse and 1/4 track. Speedin Bob out ran all of the above, (including many highly modded Cobra's, with drivers that race these "twisty events all season), and was a full 1.5 seconds faster on the course than anyone else. Ladies and gents, that is quite an accomplishment. Speedin Bob did all of the Lightning community proud! (much to the chagrin of the cobra boys, I might add.)
The 1/4 times were something of a disappointment to all, as there was no track prep whatsoever. There were several "11 second cobra's" there that couldn't break out of the 13's. 'Ol Franko, with his www.JLPerf.com bannered "L", did manage a 12.91 @ 106 on F-1's, and that was launching at dead idle and rolling power on gradually. The Lightning's totally dominated the cobra's and cobra R's on the 1/4 track. The fastest cobra was the R, which did manage a 12.95 @ 114 MPH.
All in all, it was a fantasticly fun weekend. Cudo's to the fine folks and new friends from the Cincy SVTOA chapter, that sponsered this event.

"All of your corba-r's belong to Bob"
if i had a non-airconditioned, non radioed, 50 thousand dollar, factory race course prepped race car, and Speedy passed me in his 5 thousand lb pickum up truck, i'd probably congratulate him on the win, but i wouldn't really mean it, and i'd secretly hate him or something. glad i don't own one.
Congrats on the record Speedy, you must be one hellava driver

Man, what all-round performance--outstanding!
I used to autox and road course my Z281LE and my Saab 9000T so I have some idea what you and your L were goin' through. Truly amazing! Give us some info/idea about how you ran the twisties--what trans gear did you 'stay' in--did you manually shift down for apexes--stock brakes/how did they hold up--etc???

Nice JOB BOb

Similar story happened at Texas SVTOA Event... We didnt have a 1/4 mile event but the Lightnings.. ( A silver one ) dominated the 2 timed events Autocross and Slalom on on Sat ...
Cobras with full cages and NOS and blowers geting embarrassed all over the Country

Frank,
Thank you very much for the shout out. I think I may have shocked/upset a few folks yesterday...
After the first session (no passing allowed), I was confident the second session was going to be a A LOT of fun....especially the convertible Cobra from Kentucky when his rear view mirror was FULL of Lightning grill for five laps and being five feet from his bumper @ 120 mph down the main straight.... Numbskull wouldn't signal me to pass either...grrrrr
Also, glad you like the gauge install.
Johnny,
Weather permitting, maybe we can take a little go-kart excurision when your in town.
Sir BBQ,
Thanks for the compliment, I try.
oh yeah.....yes, yes they did...or something
Rod,
The only mods I ran for the event were JL air filter (no tube) JL/Diablo chip, BelTech shackles, and Ruslow's panhard bar. Everthing else stock. The bar performed MARVELOUS. THANK YOU STAN!!
The AutoX really helped to get a feel of the trucks toss-ability and what gearing to use.
On the Road Course, I stayed VERY cognicent for potential brake fade. However, there was only one spot on the course where the ABS barely started to pulse (at least with my driving style anyway) I tried to carry as much momentum as possible with minimal braking. Yes, I may have lifted a tad sooner but was able to trail brake without too much concern.
As for the gearing, I left it in overdrive the entire time once I was somewhat comfortable with the course. I tried using the O/D button in a couple sections but it was VERY tricky to trip the switch while turning. To compensate, I used the accel to kick it down a gear, lift slightly, then tap it to keep it in the lower gear and RPM's up in prep for the next turn/section.
One BIG help to my 'success' was when L-Acious and I hopped aboard Thunder with the head driving instructor. It gave both of us a chance to see the line he used as well as help push a broke Countour off the track (by hand of course) with Cobras flying by at 85+ mph...eeek
Doug,
Touche' Killin Cobra's is GOOOOOOD
All,

SPEEDY,
AWESOME job!! Looks as if you found another purpose for your L.
Way to go on beating such an impressive field.
Way to go Speedin Bob and Frank,
Speedy, I think we all have a tear in one of our eye's, you did all of us L owner's proud.
Way to beat up on them Cobra's. Some of us L's had a little fun also this past weekend, beating up on the local SVTCobra club cars at my local 1/4 mile track.
