Detonation/ Knock Retard

In the GTP world everybody is always talking about Knock Retard (the PCM pulling timing to alivieate detonation).

I hear people talk about pinging and was wondering if the lightning performs 'knock retard'. I never ever heard my GTP ping, and would probably wet myself if I heard my lightning do so.

They didn't put knock sensor in the L because I heard it was too noisy of a motor. My Z28 had them, but we just stuck resistors in line to limit the amount of "noise" they picked up.

The Lightning does have a knock sensor, it's just not turned on from the factory in the PCM. Last summer, we started doing some testing with it. The problem is if you just turn it on, the performance of the truck will suffer greatly because the KS tables are not set up for a performance vehicle, they just have junk code in there. We have been testing different calibrations and eventually we should have calibrations that allow the use of the knock sensor without hurting performance.

Hey Crued -

I've never heard my GTP ping either, but my Lightning sure does with the right (or wrong) conditions.

I thought detonation was extremely bad and that major damage is about to occur if you do hear it.

Lame question. Could a knock sensor pick up exterior noise (open headers) and retard timing when it doesn't need to.
