Two part boost question

My 99 L ,all stock except for psp filter kit makes a max of about 8.5 to 9 lbs of boost. This is less than most people say they make. Is my truck lame ,or is this the normal amount? This is at sea level on a 65 degree day. Also, how can you tell if your boost valve is closing all the way? There must be a way to check it? Maybe i am just old and slow. Thanks in advance! Skip, I have a Pro-M mass air on my truck. I noticed an immediate increase in power and boost when I installed it. The extra flow on the inlet allows the blower to produce more boost.

On the stock gauge, I went from 8 lbs to 10. I have since added a PSP 2 lb pulley, and now the boost gauge reads in never, never land?

I gave me a nice P/U in the mid range.

Where in Los Angeles are you. I'm in No. Orange County

Thanks Jay, I live in Westchester near the 405 & La Tijera. There is a red 99 L about two blocks from me but I have never met the owner! Unreal!

I read your post on low boost, and i have a question regarding my high boost. I have no performance mods,as of yet, and at 4700 RPMS the gauge goes past the 10. Is this a half-way accurate reading, or are these boost gauges just *****??
Oh, and Skip, i was in the area of where u live and i also spotted that Red L last week. I think im thinking of the same area, right by Loyola Marymount U. right??

Loyola Marymount is only about two miles from my house. I live behind the Buggy Whip restaurant.

Skip, your truck sounds normal. Stock boost is about 8 psi. Some people will see between 8-10 on some trucks. If you have less than 8 stock, that would be cause for concern. The filter kit usually shows an increase of 1-2 psi so sounds like your right on.

Might want to check your actuator (tip-in valve) setting. Someone has a link up to a well done website all about our trucks. Know what I am talking about?

I used to go to high school very near 3rd and Labrea. (Daniel Murphy high)

Alaska is a great place!! I have been there four times fishing the Kenai River. Largest salmon I caught was a 62 pound hen at Eagle Rock while fishing with Rod Berg from Rod and Reel. Soon the only way to get a fish up there will be with a chisel!l I will have to check the boost valve, but after reading Sal's reply it is probably ok.

Diffintely check your boost actuator. click on chucks homepage for excellent instructions. My L went from around 8psi to approaching 10 with very little work.

The boost actuator is located on the driver's side of the intake close to the firewall. There are (2) 10mm bolts that hold it in place. One you can see in the pic and the other is on the backside of the actuator closest to the firewall. Pay attention to the slots location in reference to the bolts so you will know where you started. Loosen bolts and raise the actuator up until you see the LEVER raise up off of the STOP. Lower it back down until the LEVER just touches the STOP then tighten bolts. Now, this is the way it was explained to me but I found that set this close the boost gauge would rise to almost "0" while cruising at 80. I went back and readjusted so I could cruise at 80 with no needle movement unless I barely moved the throttle (and I mean barely). This setting was probably halfway between the stock setting and the just touching setting. The first thing I noticed was the needle jumped immediately to 10lbs and climbed from there. Stock it jumped to 9.5lbs and climbed. The total boost also increased by a 1/2lb to 1/4lb more. I also ran a tick quicker with my fastest mph at the track. The temps were warmer and there was less traction (it rained until the track opened). I think this adjustment is worth a small amount of speed. Besides, it's free.
