tools for JL pulley install
I've installed the JL pulley a couple times now (removed for warranty work) and both times I made a couple trips to the store for more tools! Hopefully this can save someone the wasted time by having all the right tools BEFORE you start the job. Not sure if all our trucks are the same or if the install for all the pulleys is the same, but this was my experience with a 3# lower from JL:
Step 1: Nuts and bolt that hold the stock pulley cage and wire shield
15mm deep socket for the 3 nuts
13mm deep socket (or short ext.) for 1 bolt
Step 2: Inspection plate bolts
13mm shallow socket
Step 3: Torque converter nuts (only removing one though)
9/16 shallow socket to loosen nut
9/16 wrench to remove (you dont want a ratchet here, it will get stuck against oil pan - dont ask me how I know
)
Step 4: Breaking the pulley loose
plenty of discussion about this already - get a cheater bar to go with the breaker bar!
Step 5: (99 or 00 only) Removing pulley adapter bolts
13mm deep socket or short ext.
Step 6: Bolt the new pulley on
5/16 hex head, should be about 2.5 - 3 inches long to get in there. (I actually had an 8mm hex that fit the bolt best, but it was too wide where it connects to the ratchet and would get stuck against the pulley when the bolt got tight)
The rest of it is tools you've already used earlier, so I won't list them. Can't remember for sure, but I think you will want both a 1.5" and a 3" ext. for this job. Hope this helps! (and I hope that all these trucks have the same bolt sizes so this wasnt a waste of my time!) By the way, the JL pulley is awesome - now I need stickier tires!
