Thumbs up SPEED

I HAVE A ESCORT 8500 WORKS GREAT. BUT NO DETECTOR IS PERFERCT. YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO USE IT AND YOUR OWN DRIVING ABILITY. THIS IS MY BEST DETECTOR TO DATE. ARTIE

Radar

I would have to agree with Artie, The Escort 8500 is the best detector I've had to date also. They are about $300 new (escort.com) sometimes you can find one on e-bay for a little less. Even with the detector you still have to drive smart and learn how it detects any radar that is being used on you. If a cop is using an instant on gun you are going to be getting a ticket no matter what. They are a big help in getting a heads up on what is ahead of you, but you still have to choose the right place and time to play.

Escort 8500

is the best I've used. Still have an early Valentine One, old escort(first one out), and a couple of Unidens. 8500 is best -for me. Buy it direct--very good warranty/satisfaction returns.

Btw, a CB radio is actually more/better help to avoid tickets, hear of accidents, detours, dangerous driving, ice, etc. Although, I have noticed in the last few weeks, the police reports have shrunk in frequency(not wanting to alert any terrorists?).

I too have been debating this in my head for quite some time. There have been several post about this recently. If it matters, I've decided with the Passport 8500 over the V1. I used to have the ol $20 ones, and learned to hate false alarms, but use it wisely. Go to RADAR TEST. They have a good many details about how they tested them and why I chose what I did. Plus, the Escort is ~$100 less than V1. Check out the Escort SR-1 and SR-X. Those look to be the way to go. But, @ $1000, I don't see me doing that any time soon. Maybe someone here has some experience with the SR-1 & SR-X.

Quick ?

I was about to order and thought I should ask here first. It says it (8500) comes with coiled SmartCord. I want to hardwire it in. Should I get the SmartCord-Direct Wire or the Direct wire cord (telephone style jack)? IOW whats the advantage of the 'SmartCord'?

Using a Bel 980 Radar/Laser...upgraded from a Bel
645i. Contact www.discountcell.com. Paid $239.95 and they carry most other brands at very good prices too.

You can't go wrong with any of the top of the big three. V-1, Escort 8500, Bell 980.

The "smartcord" means it is a power cord that has a mute button/signal lights somewhere in it (either on the end or inline).

You'll want the direct-wire Smartcord if you plan to hardwire it in.

Here's how my install looks:

Valentine One all the way!!! Nothing beats knowing which direction the "threat" is coming from. I hated when my old detectors would go off and you don't know if its from behind, in front or where. With the V1 you know every time. As long as it's one of the top performers, I will never buy anything else.
Just my 2 cents.

I personally like the Valentine. I got a ticket a few weeks ago but the Mississippi state trooper ambushed me. No radar detector would have saved me. I'm glad I was driving the loaner ('02 explorer) car Ford had given me while my truck was being repaired for a couple of weeks. If it would have been the Lightning I would have been going a lot faster. I think most of those companies offer a free trial. Try them out, I did a few years ago and went with the Valentine.

It really doesn't matter anymore...why you ask?

Most police radars are evolving yearly...now they are typically trigger activated and the officer is trained to estimate, acquire, then "laze" or "activate" on a particular vehicle. When done properly...it doesn't matter if you are doing 10 or 50 over the posted...YOU ARE TOAST'.

The only time that "Always On" radar is typically used is when there is an identified "SPEED ALLEY" (ie numerous reports of speeders or accidents).

This is a planned event to get the attention of travelers...with or without radar detectors. I can assure you folks...with the equipment available today to LE, save the bucks on a radar detector (unless you do a lot of interstate travel and past these "Speed Alleys"...and use the funds for additional mods or save it for the tickets!

I have not heard of a unit yet that I can not defeat.
