fuel filter replacement help!!!
Make sure it is the 3/8" fuel line tool. Mine was a little difficult to take off. While pushing the tool in the connector, pull on the line to work it loose - work the fuel line back and forth while pulling it off. Be careful of excess fuel coming out the line.

This sucks! I don't see what the tool is accomplishing. The 3/8" tool hits the collar of the filter tube before it gets into the connector. The 5/16" tool was at least was flush with the connector. Either way it's not coming off.
You think we could get an extra inch or two of clearance to work.

Try a different tool...
I just finished replacing a rear fuel tank on my '95 (non-L ;(). I have one of the plastic tools and have used in to swap filters. The filter fittings and the return line came off no problem.
The supply line wouldn't budge. One of my friends came over with a slotted metal type tool, no luck. In this case I was glad as he had ragged on my for my lack of ability.
Anyway, went to Pep Boys and found this one.....
Click, pull, off. This thing was $7, the POS plactic one I had cost $5. Sometimes a different tool will do the trick. In the case of fuel filters I have also found that unbolting the bracket gives you a better angle on my truck.
Good luck.....

The tool I used was the little grey one in clonetek's photo.

Just push it in till it clicks. Once it clicks, pull out the fuel line.
