Thumbs up Tranny tear down at 29k results

My tranny has been abused on the street and strip for 29k in my 00L. I wanted heavier internals[clutchpacks] for future power upgrades, abuse and a tourqe converter installed. The stock tranny had been run with a transgo shift kit and the line pressure raised big time from a chip. The chip actually gave more 1-2 kick than just the transo go did. My tranny fluid had been changed twice during this 29k with regular ford mercon. The tranny was tore down on a bench and all major wear parts were inspected. The suprising results were my clutches, converter, pump ect were all in near perfect condition . I have the original clutches and they look new. I don't know exactly how many passes i have down the 1320 with the original set up shifting hard but i know it is well over 100 passes. I could not tell you why my tranny held up so good and others have not. Maybe... factory tech had a hand in building mine or it was built on the right day of the week lol. With all the posts on motors and trannys not holding up to abuse,my opinion on the tranny has changed for the better.

That's great news. I have a little over 22K on my trans with
many quarter mile passes and it shifts perfectly still. No slippage.
What # is your truck ibfast ??? Maybe our trucks were put together on casual Friday instead of hangover Monday

Greg,
That is good news about your clutches holding up for that many miles,we need to get to the track to see what the difference you gained with this and hoped this help with your problem! I will be doing this rebuild to my tranny when everything is available!

What an encouraging post!

Let's hope that the rest of the tranny line has the same genes.

Rob, when i got my build # i hid it so good that even i can't find it. Your killing me with all the pictures of the shaker hood....making me want to spend money i haven't even made yet lol.

Matt, looks like nex't wednesday is going to be the nex't chance to try out the goodies. Thanks for the dyno results on the 160 thermostat,i can see were the temp gauge is almost 1/4 inch lower at operating temp than stock.

Y2K,i have a 99 4x4 with 56k and no tranny problems. As a matter of fact iv'e had 11 different ford trucks and only one had tranny slippage and that was at 95k

Chuck,
I dynoed the 170 stat then put in a 160 stat and made another run and gained 4HP across the whole powerband and made a consistant 7ft.pounds of torque through its lower powerband!
Not bad for a $25 mod!!

Zorprime, i will never forget the abuse your tranny took last year at byron. I would have to think you had 100 passes worth of wear on your tranny with that one run.You should post the pictures for all the new guys and have a "ford tuff"caption to go along with it. It doesn't take a birds eye veiw as i had to be amazed that your tranny held up.

Matt, you should do a post on the dyno results for the 160 stat. I am sure others would be interested as there was lots of debate on this in the past, right chuck?Besides were else is anybody going to get a little hp this cheap. By the way have you dynoed any new intakes lately lol. greg

Cool

Greg,
LOL That is why i am taking most of my mods to the dyno to do before and after results instead of just assuming they work because certain people say they work. The 2 mods you put on your truck last week dynoed very well for me and the addition of your new convertor it should be interesting to see what times you turn and if your problem was in the convertor or possible snout as you suspect.

If I'm not mistake, I think he slipped it into reverse at about 100mph or so, cause his throttle was stuck under a floor mat.

more good dyno work, thanks for the numbers.

Wink

Wasn't ZorPrime's truck the one where the floor mat stuck the throttle wide open during a 1/4 mile run. I think he threw it in Park or Reverse trying to stop it. I could be wrong who it happened to but it happened to somebody.

Greg,

When I had the line mod valve put in mine at 18,000 mile the tranny tech said my tranny looked great. The fluid was in great shape and had a very small amount of material stuck to the magnet. I've been running a chip with pumped up pressure for a long time. When I had my chip out for a reburn to soften the shift it chirped 2nd gear everytime at WOT. I've got enough time slips to choke a horse so it hasn't be babied. I hope I didn't jinx myself saying this.

Matt,

You mentioned a 170 stat and then going to a 160. Is that what you did or did you go from the stock 180 to the 160. The reason I asked is because I pulled my 160 and went to a 170 to see what the difference might be but the weather has changed too much to tell.

Chuck,
About a month ago i dynoed the stock 180 stat then put the 170 stat in and made 2HP and 3ft.pounds of torque with that change then about 2 weeks ago i dynoed the 170 stat then installed the 160 and the numbers turned out very well in deed from reading my reply earlier. From my testing at the dyno the 160 stat should make about 6HP more and around 10ft.pounds of torque more than the stock 180 stat if you combine the last 2 dynoes i did.For $25 that is really a good part to put in our trucks.

Matt,

Thanks for the info. All I can say to all the people who gave me hell about this mod is j/k.

P.S. Keep up the good work.
